Tonight I went to a "World Single Malts Dinner" at the
Flat Iron Grill in Issaquah with my girlfriend and another friend. This combined three of my favorite things:
1) Whiskey
2) Great food
3) Listening to
Breck talk about whiskey.
This was a special paired dinner, with a drink to complement each course as it was served. We were in a separate room of the restaurant, away from the main dining area. We had five separate courses, and five drinks to go with them. (Don't worry, the whiskey servings were small . . . we didn't get sloshed.)
I won't bore you with all of the details, but I'll say that the whiskeys were all great, the food fantastic and unique, and Breck's explanation of the history, regulations, practices and taste of the whiskeys was informative and entertaining.
I took just three pics. Here are the whiskeys that we tried, in addition to a starter cocktail called "penicillin":
The Aberlour 16-year was paired with "charred eye of rib, poblano chorizo hominy stuffed squash":
And oh my God was that a good dish. The beef was top-notch, and though I'm not usually a big fan of squash I gobbled all that up too, and started scraping up all of the bits.
The Bushmills 16 was paired with "currant bread pudding, butterscotch custard, port reduction":
^ And that was another crowd-pleaser.
I'm generally not much for going out to eat; most of the time, I'd rather just stay home. However, I really enjoyed the whole experience, and I'd definitely recommend it if you can make it for one of their upcoming events, as they'll be doing more events like this in the future. You can sign up on Flat Iron Grill's email list at the website (
https://www.theflatirongrill.com), and you'll get a notification when they plan another.
Thank you for a great evening, Breck. You and the team did a hell of a job. I'll be back for more!
