Post subject:  Sighting in a 300 WinMag
So I just snagged a new 300WinMag and need to get it sighted in for this weekend. I'm not very familiar with this round. How do you guys normally sight yours in? I know it wont be the same ranges as my .308, so looking for some pointers. Its a Tikka (of course!) T3x SuperLite, with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 with a bdc reticle.

At what range do you anticipate to be taking game at?

I'll be on the Eastside, so figure 200-400 and beyond.

I sight mine in at 300yd zero.
Federal premium 180gr noslers
Basically means I'm within 6" high or low out to 500yds
Aim 3" low at 100' , 5.5 high at 500
After that your need to know your drops.
I printed a copy and taped it to the bottom of my hunting stock.

As an RSO at ESC, we sight rifles in at 100 yards. This makes the math much easier. Start at 25 yards to ensure you are on the paper, then move out to 50, and finally dial it in dead on at 100 yards.

This is sort of like what I was thinking of doing. I have a box of the Sako 180gr to try, and I've heard great things about the 200gr Hornady ELDXs as well. Maybe I'll go pick up a box of those Federal 180s partitions too, to test them out.

Nearly the same here. 291 zero. Cheat sheet on stock.

24" barrel.

This is sort of like what I was thinking of doing. I have a box of the Sako 180gr to try, and I've heard great things about the 200gr Hornady ELDXs as well. Maybe I'll go pick up a box of those Federal 180s partitions too, to test them out.

I don't have one, but chuck hawks table has mean point blank range at 303 for 180gr, so that sounds perfect.

Zeroed at 200 with 180gr.
Have my dope sticker on left side of stock for a quick glance as pulling rifle up.
Indexing on my scope is good to 800 yds and round will hit target, but won't take a shot over 500.

I ended up zeroing mine this year at 300. I got lucky and shot my deer at 317yds. I dont think that will be the norm. I think next year I will zero at 200. Less adjustment needed at 100, and little for 300. Past that I should have time to make the proper adjustments.

Kyle, doesn't your scope's instruction sheet specify a zero point in order to make the BDC feature useable?
Tom has a Leupold variable to 18 or 20x on his PD rifle and uses the BDC feature very successfully
on our trips. He zero's it at either 100 or 200 IIRC.

I have mildot scopes on most of my rifles and use the Hornady calculator to determine point bank zero range as Jeff suggests.

Then I transfer the data to Excel, adjust font size to suit me and print it for field notes.
