Loved Crimson Tide.

For that matter "Behind Enemy Lines" was, as a movie, terrible IMHO. But the back and forth between McConnaughey and Hackman over the radio was great. "You still got your boots on?" "Roger. They were tied on."

It was Owen Wilson not Mathew McConnaughey

That one!

Was going to post this in the random pic thread but here seemed more appropriate.

M*A*S*H was actually a movie in additional to a TV Show. If we are going to count it then it heads straight to #1 for watchability.

but Hogans Heroes got the prison camp idea from a movie - Stalag 17.

My all time favorites have always been
Stalag 17
Dirty Dozen
Memphis Bell

I remember liking Platoon Leader when I was in high school. Haven't seen it since. I imagine it didn't age well. lol

By the time that movie came out I'd already OD'd on John Wayne.

That would be 1965. :)
It was the last film that Duke made in black and white film.

I don't think I saw Glory. Great Civil War movie.

Gettysburg.

The Patriot (not exactly "histrocial", but fairly accurate I think for the era of combat). Same thing could be said for Brave heart.

A Bridge Too Far

Patton

Of them all, Band of Brothers is pretty darn accurate.

While not "technically" a war movie, The Kingdom is pretty accurate I think in regards to GWOT.

Three Kings is pretty good for the Gulf War.

Heartbreak Ridge.

too many good movies to choose my favorite. This one hasn't been mentioned yet-

When Trumpets Fade

I believe it is still free for Prime members

M*A*S*H the movie was far superior to the TV show IMHO. Donald Sutherland's Hawkeye is much better. Another one that I forgot to add to my list, but is totally one of my favorite movies of all time. I guess I don't really consider it a "war movie", even though it's in a war setting.

Run Silent Run Deep
Saving Private Ryan
Bridge Over The River Kwai
The Killing Fields
The Dirty Dozen

Forrest Gump (don't laugh, the scenes in Vietnam are pretty scary)
Master and Commander

...and a few dozen others.

I cannot really identify a favorite, I loved them all for their specific content, but I will tell you that I watched Saving Private Ryan moreso than any others.

Looking forward to the USS Indianapolis movie, my great uncle Walter McFall was a survivor and only spoke of his terror in the water ONCE. He died an alcoholic at age 50.
