Looks like I might be getting an Xbox one S for a late xmas present.

I was told to "look up" the xbox for compatibility of older games, etc. when I came across the xbox one s. I knew nothing about them until tonight.

But wait... there's more:
When watching TV, it's ~30 watts, which is down from ~78 watts.
When gaming, it's ~50 watts which is down from ~110 watts.
In instant-on standby, it's ~10 watts which the same as the original.
In instant-on standby while downloading, it's ~20 watts, which is the same as the original too.

All this goodness and it still plays the 360 games.
Since I've never played any of them, they're all new to me.
Pawn shops are full of them for very little $$.

OK, I just went to http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/backward-compatibility to see what 360 games were playable. Looks like still a lot to pick from.

There are a lot, but not as many as you might think. Maybe 10% of my old games worked. And yes, get a big hard drive.

Will any of the external hard drives work?

Yeah, those will work. Also, you can still buy the 360 games for cheap at the pawn shop as long as it's on the backwards compatibility list. What you end up downloading is the emulator to run the game on the one. That'll save you hard drive space and cash.

I have seen a crap load of 360 games in the pawn shops. That's where I got the idea.
Looks like I would need to make a list of "want-to-buy" games and just have it handy whenever I hit up a pawn shop.

Now, let's throw in another variable.

This xbox will NOT be going on the big screen. I will have it on it's own table so I'm thinking of something between a 22~27" monitor as they are really cheap nowadays.

I also won't need speakers. I'll just use a good headset.

I'd recommend hooking it up to your big screen...the graphics are really good and look great on a proper tv. But fonts are pretty small so you might have trouble reading text on a small screen.

As mentioned, get an external HD. Most any should work but there are some Xbox branded ones. I went with an Xbox branded Seagate.

In terms of games, some of my favorites are:

Destiny
The Division
Forza 6
Forza Horizon 3 (2 blows)
Just Cause 3
Fallout
Peggle (really fun for a stupid casual game)

What edogg said. While you can see the screen just fine, if you can't see the detailed small stuff you won't have a good game experience. Until a couple months ago I was still using my old 32" tv, and had to pull a chair up to relatively close. With my 55" I can comfortably play from the normal TV viewing spot on the couch across the room.

Well by using the 60", I'll be saving some money by not having to buy the smaller monitor.
I guess the wife can just keep her nose stuffed in her tablet.


What would I do w/o WaGu's help?
