Ouch. Was it an old bolt, been through many tens of thousands of rounds? Or did something weird happen?

the bolt was about a year old with 500 or so rounds.
this was one of the bcg that Surplus Ammo sells.
the ammo was my 77g match ammo that is not overpressured.

Are you planning on taking it back to SAA to see what they say about it?

They are pretty competent people in there. I was thinking at least taking it in to give them a heads up. There may have been a casting issue on it etc. Just good to give them a chance to inspect when a piece of equipment that they sell failed randomly.

SAA is a great shop, and I personally do not know a single person who thinks otherwise. I am planning on outfitting my AR pistol with the same Bolt and BCG from SAA, your freak accident has not deterred that one bit.

I didn't know they had bolts that where under 70 dollars ,40 dollars for a bolt is pretty cheap , I might look that place up.

Guessing a fatigue failure originating at a stress riser (sharp corner, material flaw, machining flaw, preexisting crack). Hard to tell at 1x magnification. Another possibility is a poor fit between the bolt and chamber, causing the bolt to be hammered each time it cycles. Buy me an SEM and I would be able to tell you for sure.

I have been seeing more and more reports of the cheaper, carpenter steel bolts doing exactly this. I bought one awhile back before I had heard of the problems so it will be going away, not even gonna try it.
