I have a Remington 700 that came with a 4-12x40 scope would I be able to put A 6-18x44 scope without getting new rings?

Assuming tube diameter is the same on both, this depends on the amount of clearance between the bottom of your objective and the barrel. How big is the objective on the current scope, and how big is it on the replacement? If the difference is less than your current clearance, it should work.

Answer these four questions and we'll be able to give you a fairly good answer.

What is the current scope make and model?
What scope are you trying to go to?
How much clearance do you have between the bottom of the objective (front of the scope) and the barrel?
Can you post a picture of the rifle/rings/scope (maybe with a ruler in the gap between objective and barrel)?

The 2mm difference wont matter, he mostly has mids or highs.

Tube diameter is the what Id look into.

You might give us a hint on why your changing, and what the purpose of the firearm is.

The current scope is a 4-12x40 that's all I know about it. It came with my 700 as a Dicks combo deal. The one I am going to put on it will be a Vortex 6-18x44.

I thought the only combo deals from Dick's included fries and a soft drink?

Measure what ya got and compare to the new scope. Trial and error is also an acceptable method albeit more expensive.

Measure the diameter of the tube. 1 inch or 30mm (1.18 inches).

What do you have against used Fords, besides they look like a used bar of soap?

Hmm. No idea how to mount a scope but happy to bash someone else's gun. Guess it's time to buy a Taurus.
