Winchester model 70 pre 64 "30GOVT'06"

My pops is battling a health issue that he's rapidly losing and has began liquidating his assets. In doing so, some of his shooters have been passed down to me and this is one of them.

Barrel marked with 30GOVT'06
Serial range 1-66,350 (Type 1 pre-war)
Redfield scope

Easy 8 out of 10 with condition.

Just wondering if anyone would possibly know a good insurance value to put on this?

Are you sure it's a pre-war? They came in .22 Hornet, .220 Swift, .257 Roberts, .270 Win, .300 H&H, .375 H&H, 7x57 Mauser and .250-3000 Savage. No 30-06 listed. SN ranged 1 - 41,750.

I might add, 1946-1963 production models had 18 standard calibers, 30-06 being one of those. SN range started at 52,549- 581-471

Are you sure it's a pre-war? They came in .22 Hornet, .220 Swift, .257 Roberts, .270 Win, .300 H&H, .375 H&H, 7x57 Mauser and .250-3000 Savage. No 30-06 listed. SN ranged 1 - 41,750.

The first ones, #1 to approx #300, are mostly all 30GOVT'06. Most pre-wars are 30GOVT'06.

Regarding insurance, my son's 1960 M70 in 30-06 in 95% condition is insured for $1800.

It has a Leopold M8 scope. That alone is worth $250.

Another thing I noticed on your Dad's gun, that butt pad was added after.

The big detractor on this gun is the recoil pad. The stock had to be cut to mount it. An unmolested stock of this era is pretty expensive, and as such, reduces the value of this gun by multiple $100s. It's hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like there is a possibility it was refinished a long time ago. Especially the wood. If it's just the wood, it doesn't matter much as the stock is already cut anyways.

If I owned it, I'd ask $1200 and take anything over $1000.

Yes, I'm the second papered owner. All original, unfortunately drilled and tapped, but shoots well and delivers meat to the freezer. 30-06. (I'm eligible for adoption, too for the record.)


The pre-wars had the 'flag' style safety lever as above, a couple variations, I think the first 4,000 were different than the ones after. The transition era rifles had a different lever that is referred to as the 'clamshell',

and then the final series look like what most people envision when they hear Model 70, very similar to the turn-down design they still use. There is also an aftermarket lever for the pre-war and (I think) transition era rifles made by Tilden, which looks very similar to what is on JP's dad's rifle. They were designed for use with a low mount scope, and were hot sellers. Quite a few people think they are factory but they aren't.

My Grandpa's rifle is a '45 production with that marking. There are pics of him shooting it off the deck of a destroyer.(he was in pre-war, all the way thru korea)
