Councilman Bob Parks is trying to get the City of Kennewick to pass a resolution opposed to HB 1588 and SB 5625 each of which will infringe on our Second Amendment Rights.
Tonight I attended the council meeting. Several others went to the podium to express their support for such a resolution. Then the Mayor let us know that he understood our message. The Mayor and 3 additional Councilmen all voiced their opposition to HB 1588 and SB 5625.
Next week is the Council Workshop Meeting where public comments will be welcomed.

Awesome. How was the rest of the crowd? Public comments were all pretty pro-2A?

Most of us learned about this proposed resolution only 2 hours before the meeting. Generally, comments were nothing more than and introduction and "I'm here to support Bob Parks resolution opposing HB 1588 and SB 5625."
Some of us met outside after that part of the meeting. We exchanged business cards and agreed to share information on future meetings.
The Workshop should be more interesting.

Good deal. It must be nice to live in an area that's pro-2A.

I'm glad the area I live in is more pro 2A than against but I fail to see the point in passing resolutions like this. Very few firearm laws can be enacted at the city level so other than just saying they are for or against it seems like they are wasting time. Dont get me wrong I think seattle is wasting time and money passing their resolutions in support of gun control. I guess I'm asking is there any point to these resolutions that do nothing other than claim support for one thing or another?

If supporting [passing] this resolution sends a message that the people of my city oppose State gun control bills, I hope it strengthens our position in the WA State Legislature.

We as citizens should be sending the message to our representives that we support (or oppose) certain legislation as it is. A city councel taking up a political oppinion on something like this just seems like wasting our tax dollars.

I'm not clear on how it's using any tax dollars at all since the business is all conducted at regularly scheduled commission meetings.

Because they could be using the time to conduct business that is actually under their jurisdiction

It's obvious you haven't been to one of these meetings and seen how much time is used for a topic.
This resolution is a good thing for all supporters of our Second Amendment.

I have been to a city council meeting before. I just don't really see the point in a city expressing a political oppinion in any direction. Again we should be contacting our state and federal representatives and making sure they are representing what we want.

It sounds like you object to doing both.

Don't know how you'd draw that conclusion from what I've said.

Both as in 'both' not either. There is no harm in doing both.
Why not use every tool at your disposal unless you are not interested in winning?

City council is a governing body not a political organization, nor is gun laws under their jurisdiction unless granted to them under firearm premption laws. I see a city expressing a political oppinion whether it is is kennewick being progun or seattle being antigun as pointless. I absolutely do believe in writing our representatives and all of my representatives have heard from me about where I stand. I am glad we have very pro 2nd ammendment represetatives in this area. But our local municipalities should not have political oppinions.
