I wondered around the site for ten mins and thanks to Benja, I got half my question answered. Thanks for the firearms travel sticky! Quick help on the last part though, please?
I'm flying home tomorrow for a my grandmas funeral and thought I'd give my dad a pistol of mine to maybe distract him and hopefully cheer him up.. Flying to SD with my WA(I594) bought gun. Can I simply have a SD gun shop do a person to person transfer since I'm giving it to my father and it will be staying there? He doesn't have a CPL. It seems like a silly question but I just want to be sure.

I'm not sure Washington rules apply if you are in SD but I'm sure SD rules due apply. Check out the requirements in that state. If none then maybe the gun shop won't know what to do either.

Yes, you can bring the gun with you and then find an FFL in SD who will transfer it to him. It doesn't matter where the gun (or the seller) is from - it only matters that the buyer is a resident of that state (at least in "free" states, AKA - not NJ/NY/CA).

Yes, bottomline - follow the laws that you are in...
Local, City, County and South Dakota State laws apply...
Since you are not a resident of SD and your father is... Federal Laws apply. Always safer to use a FFL to transfer.
