Thanks for that extended comment, dreadi. I particularly had NOT considered the takedown point - one of his 22 rimfire rifles is a reproduction Winchester 1906 that comes apart, and might fit in a reasonably compact box. His M1 will be a different matter, when the time comes.

We're flying Southwest, nonstop, so I think I'll start off taking several of his handguns in checked luggage. SW policy allows multiple guns in a single hard case, so I only have to buy one case and one lock to take his two SIGs. His Walther 22 is in its own case, and I just have to confirm with SW that they're OK with multiple hard cases in a single piece of checked luggage.

Thanks again for the continuing help.

You're welcome. One more thing about handguns that I like to tell people, just in case they have the strings to pull. You can legally ship handguns via common carrier. The trick will be finding a common carrier that will do it from a non licensed person to a non licensed person or to yourself, and any other legalities that might be involved.

I'm aware of the ship to yourself rule laid out in the federal guidelines. I think the problem is likely to be with the shipper policies - like the overnight rule, it's not required by the law it's just their policy. My several experiences with FedEx lead me to believe that they will NOT ship to any but a FFL, although I've never actually tried to ship to any but a dealer, C&R holder or manufacturer. But I've never specifically asked about shipping to self, and since the FedEx facility I use isn't too far off my regular beaten path I may just stop in and ask one of these days.

About three years ago I mailed a rifle to myself from Seattle to Florida. With insurance, tracking, signature required, it was about $75.

Shipping a rifle should be more in the $35 range, UPS or USPS.

Or FedEx, but I hate those fuckers.

Well, that's not overnight or 2nd Day Air or anything . . . but regular ground shipping should be right in that ballpark, maybe even with insurance.

$75 is crazy high for ground shipping of a rifle.
