A while back I bought some .50-caliber Speer bullets from American Reloading. I don't remember how much I paid for them, but it was a good price, and after I bought a Desert Eagle recently I decided to look for more . . . but unfortunately they're out of stock.

However, I did notice that they have Speer 54-to-50 and 50-to-44 caliber sabots in their Bargain Bin, so I started looking hard at those. From the pics, it sure looked like they use regular Speer handgun bullets, just stuck into a plastic thingy to make it a sabot. So, I took a chance and ordered a couple thousand of the 54-to-50 and 250 of the 50-to-44. Today a couple of godawful heavy boxes arrived:

And inside:

Here's one of the .50-cal bullets alongside one of the .50-cal bullets that I had bought earlier:

My micrometer confirmed a diameter of 0.500", and my scale showed 325 grains.

And here's one of the .44-cal bullets:

Diameter is 0.429", and weight is 270 grains.

I'm pretty convinced that the .50-caliber bullets are Speer #4495. Bought like this, they are 20 cents each. Bought from Midway (if they were in stock), they would be 52 cents plus shipping:

I believe that the .44 bullets are Speer #4461. Again, 20 cents each from American Reloading or 37 cents from Midway, though they are again out of stock:

By the way, after I checked this I went back to buy more .50 and I apparently got the last 250-pack. Sorry. icon_eek They still have .44 available, though!

Both products are shown here:

Thoughts, insight?

All that wasted plastic packaging. You do not love the earth.

Well, there is that . . . but better in my trash can than in a berm after being shot from a muzzleloader, right?

Ha ha. True. I bet you could actually resell the sabots. I would use them for practice in my black powder rifle with plated bullets. I may actually buy some other bullets from these guys. Thanks for the lead. I don't have any good 44 mag bullets.

Hey, I can help you with your carbon footprint with recycling all the 44/50 sabots after you liberate all the slugs from them. .

They work well in my dad's 50 cal muzzle loader.

Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, nod, nod, know what I mean ?

FYI, the 54-to-50 (i.e., .50-cal bullets) are back in stock:

They were out of stock for a long time, but now back in stock again:

The price has gone up, but still . . . at 33 cents a pop, that's cheap for a good .50-cal bullet that you can use for 50AE, Beowulf, etc.

I'm tempted.
I've been a bit impressed and a bit envious since you first posted this up.
