I've been making this for myself for years, calling it a gin & tonic. It is refreshing and especially nice in warm weather.

I know that this is not how a gin & tonic is made and not what you'd get if you ordered one at a bar. I've had a hard time getting an answer on what style of drink to call this, so I thought I'd consult the collective wisdom here.

First, get a 20 oz Yeti or equivalent tumbler. Squeeze half a lime:

I like to turn the lime sideways and squeeze again to get extra juice and some astringent zest flavor:

Add two shots of your favorite gin:

OPTIONAL - half a shot of rum and/or one or two drops of bitters:

Fill with a 12 oz can of tonic:

This should fill the mug to about a half inch from the top. Take a generous swig and top off with ice.

A Gim-lonic? A NYC Pirate? (Cap'n Morgan goes to Manhatten?) An alcoholic cleans out the liquor cabinet? Maybe call it a spring cleaning?
You have a lot going on there.

I don't know that it's a named drink in those proportions. You're somewhere between a gin and tonic and a cuba libre minus the coke. Most tonic drinks use a significant portion less tonic water to liquor ratio.

I guess who cares what it's called if it's good?

Yeah, it's basically a rum & coke, (cuba libre), with gin instead of rum and tonic instead of coke. A traditional gin & tonic is mostly gin with a splash of tonic and a slice or twist of lime. I usually make it without the rum and bitters.

It is very tasty.

Don't squeeze the lime so hard. You don't want the last 10%ish of the juice. That how you get that bitterness from citrus.

I guess "Tonic Rickey" could work.

I like a little bitterness in my drink. I wouldn't make the extra squeeze if I had an especially large or juicy lime half, or if I were preparing it for someone else.

Rum Gin Refresher
Instructions

- 1.5 oz dark rum - 1 oz gin - 0.5 oz lime juice - 0.5 oz simple syrup - 2 dashes Angostura bitters - Club soda To make the drink, fill a shaker with ice and add the rum, gin, lime juice, simple syrup, and bitters. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds and strain into a glass filled with ice. Top with club soda and garnish with a lime wedge. Enjoy the perfect balance of the smoothness of rum and the botanical notes of gin in every sip!
