They aren't the only ones that do it like that. The company I retired from introduced an entirely new enterprise system. Went home on Friday, closing down my desktop running the "old" system and when Monday rolled around it turned out to be more like Thursday before anyone could get any work done.

Several of us told the IT Department to test the system by running the new one "in parallel" with the old for a while to see what hiccups we'd encounter. They refused citing "too expensive". They got their way and I think the ultimate cost in lost revenue and productivity was somewhere in the $10 Million range. I thought IT guys were supposed to be smarter than us "mere mortals". icon_eek icon_eek

They sure can be stupid. We had similar at my place though we are not that size. Best yet, they did not pull the data out of our old system correctly, and 2yrs later we still do not have our cross reference information fixed or pricing all in the system and are relying on spreadsheets for every Mfg plus a xref database and reman unit spreadsheet...

Plus they added double the keystrokes to do everything, oh it is only a couple seconds longer. umm yeah x1000 times a day over a year.. stop wasting my time shithead.. Much of it I am sure comes from corporate, just wish the IT folks could pull their head out and think. Explain to Corp how they are about to cost themselves more $ due to poor efficiency long term if it is done wrong. I have seen a few good IT folks that had that ability to see the big picture, but they typically move up out of ground level IT and are lost into management.

We should be back to normal today.

I have spent 5 hours rewriting the part of my system that did NICS checks, but we're fully online now, and fully operational.

For stores who actually call NICS, yesterday was bad, and I think this entire week will probably be pretty bad. While I was coding away in the morning our store had to do a couple of background checks by phone - and that was 30-45 minutes of hold time.

Probability of delays will also be higher - for everyone - because human investigators are trying to cope with the new system, and spend more time per check, according to NICS communications.

And lucky for you, you could do your own coding. What about the poor присоска* that has to hire someone to do the work for them. How does anyone recover either their out of pocket expense or the value of their own time to fix what the government has screwed up?

Hah!

The whole point of my store is that I can use code to be more efficient than the other stores. Otherwise - why would I open store number 12 in an area which already has tons of them?

That's exactly my unfair advantage.

Yes, but why should the businessman be forced to use his own time and resources to fix what the government screwed up? This practice of the gov goes way beyond just problems with their online services.

How do you like doing all the book work for the State in collecting and remitting Sales Tax and the "compensation" they give you for your time/efforts? That's just one of many.

There's a saying for that, "it's the cost of doing business."

Public APIs and other code change all of the time and businesses need to rewrite their code to adjust...unfortunately, the .gov just didn't give people any time with a beta or developer version to do this ahead of time - which is what would normally happen in the business world.

You're conflating some fairly large issues into one...and it sounds whiny.
