After 5yrs of trying I finally got the job done early Sat morning, notched my Elk tag and filled the freezer. Spotted a big herd and followed them to a clearing. I could not get any closer than 600+yrds off due to open land. Herd finally trotted off but this badboy lagged behind then ducked back around a big blackberry pile back where he had come from. Guy with me suggested we move up so we hoofed across the open land and then followed the trail around the pile. Bull was still back there milling around, and gave me a nice broadside shot from under 70yrds. The Savage Hog Hunter got it done, handloaded 308WIN with a 178Grn ELD-X did the trick, bull went 50yrds and fell over. Got him home and qtrs hung in the garage, temps cooperated so spent 2 days breaking him down and getting it all in the freezer. Plus I managed to convince the wife we needed a shed for the mower and other stuff, the garage is cars and pellets only! Was only way she was going to be able to have room to park in there, so was easy sell...

Congrats, Larry! I’ve seen you shoot that Hog Hunter. That mfer didn’t have a chance at 70 yards!

I spent those years with stick and string trying to get in close. Learning how to use calls to talk to and taunt an elk into coming to me. Sort of a dance where you get to establish a dialog/story with the bull. Once I was in sight of the herd I actually pulled my cow call out of my pack out of habit and had it in my mouth until the bull was down. But coming around that corner and having him right there was almost anti-climactic. I saw him from a long way off then never saw him again until I was ontop of him. I never got a chance to watch him and enjoy being so close and stalk him. I came around a corner and 5 seconds later pulled the trigger.

Furthering the idea of "it's the hunt, not the kill..."

Exactly, that nails it. Anti-climactic. I am extremely grateful to finally have my 1st elk down, just this hunt was over in a blink.

Sometimes the odds are in your favor, and you take the seemingly easy one, but those 5 years archery hunting and not getting one prepared you for this. It may seem to have been easy, but in reality it was 5 years in the making. Congrats.
