Canning up some boozy cherries this weekend and would like some recommendations for a mid-range brandy and bourbon. Cherries will be used in cocktails and ice cream, and the left over booze will be used in a Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Whisky Sour, or Aviation.

What can you recommend? Bonus points for cheap but great quality at Costco! Otherwise we have Freddy's and a Total Wine nearby.

For bourbon, I’m a big fan of Basil Hayden. You can get it at Costco for about $35 or so.

Pretty sure R&R is Canadian Whiskey. But after a few I don't care anyway ;)

For good, cheap, make that cost effective, Bourbon, try some Evan Williams.

I admit I am ignorant to the differences between Bourbon and Whiskey.

If it isn't beer (10 Barrel Brewing for the win!) that I'm drinking, it's going to be Jim Beam Black, or Jim Beam Rye.

Good stuff that mixes quite well with a Coke, or pleasant enough straight-up on the rocks.

All bourbon is whiskey, but all whiskey is not bourbon. Examples of non-bourbon whiskies are scotch whiskey, Irish whiskey, Canadian whiskey, rye whiskey, etc. Bourbon whiskey must be made from at least 51% corn and produced in the United States.

Evan Williams and Jim Beam are both good for being entry level priced. Costco has 1/2 gallons of Jim Beam for $35 and just started carrying liters of Evan Williams for $18.

I personally prefer Beam but they’re about comparable.

Basil Hayden is a step up in price but also much finer quality. If you’re making bourbon cherries I’d personally use something a little cheaper like the ones mentioned above.

R&R is Canadian Whisky, used to be my go to for whisky & coke.

My current favorite for bourbon is Buffalo Trace. Easily gotten at Costco and nice for sipping. If you're mixing, I use Jim Beam (also easily gotten at CC). If you're looking for more medicinal, Wild Turkey 101, but hard to find at CC. The best prices I've found are at Trader Joe's. About $28 for a 1.75 liter bottle (the same bottle most places sell for twice that).

If you're looking for more high end bourbons, my current favorite is Bird Dog, although Old Forrester is right up there.

Brandy? Family lore says we used to own a large chunk of ...drawing a blank and a great uncle was swindled out of it around the turn of the previous century down in Brazil. My family still runs three distilleries in Portugal, making Cachaça or aguardente as well as Madeira port.

None of that was helpful, not a big fan of brandy, although I probably have half a dozen bottles in my bar, don't think I've even opened them or tasted what's inside.

Evan Williams and Wild Turkey are the high octane choices for soaking fruits and making syrups.

Beam is mellow and always a safe bet.

You can still get a case of Beam at Winco for $140 out the door. That's $10.98 a fifth after taxes.
