Anyone a New York native? I've never been and have always wondered what the hell the buzz on the Italian/Jewish/NY pastry scene was. They look great on TV when. I'm talking cannoli, lobster rolls, etc. Can you order them and have them shipped here? Anyone know from where? Is it worth it, am I really missing out? Any words of wisdom, advice, tips, whatever would be appreciated. I guess it's just such a foreign thing to me I am pretty intrigued.

I spent 10 days in Manhattan and the surrounding areas shortly after 9/11. Pastries and Pizza from the little Mom and Pop shops were and FANTASTIC. I will have to look at some old pics to catch the names of some of the places we went to. Having it fresh is the way to go. I think having it shipped over would defeat the purpose IMO. What about finding a New York style place local? We did go here: https://instagram.com/lbspumonigardens? ... sqpn8j3dn2

It's the water. Literally, they have different tasting/reacting water (and sometimes yeast).

It's beef of weck. Haahhaha from the German kummelweck. But yes, awesome. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beef_on_weckIt's just more old school German and Italian stuff we just don't get here hardly if at all. My my grandad came as a kid, by himself, from Italy. Not sure how, but he ended up in a German section of Cincinnati. My dad told me stories of the delis and even pies and pastries. Don't get me started but I have to say most/a lot of food in the PNW SUCKS. ESPECIALLY on the north end.

Not a native NY'er, but lived close by for a long time. Went down into the city once or twice a year. The food you're talking about has no comparison out here, I know ,I've been looking for almost 4 years now... Italian, Jewish, Portuguese, etc.. is fantastic! Company I worked for had a plant in Brooklyn and was headquartered in Manhattan, and we had a lot of people travelling between that would keep us supplied with fresh deli stuff, and the bigshots would have cheesecakes limo'd up every wed.
