However, I'm not going to empty my hopper between cooks, and I don't cook the same thing back-to-back to be able to tell the difference . . . and I'm willing to bet that 99% of the people out there are the same way.

And just to be clear, I'm talking about pellet smokers here, and only pellet smokers.

So my vote is to pick a wood type that sounds good, and just roll with it.


And this is why I have about 160lbs of Bear Mountain gourmet blend, with another 60lbs in my Pit Boss' hopper.

This has been discussed before here, in slight variances, but I will grant there are variables that make as much or more difference.

On one hand TIME is huge. If I go too long with any heavy wood, wow way too much..........yet alder or apple I can go longer and the product if not too dead over cooked, still is tasty and edible.

Brine v. no brine is huge.

Smoke is more sneaky, more subtle. Take bacon, please......wait......take bacon and vary the wood. Do a mix of woods, don't empty the smoker, whatever - it's all pretty good and the meat might SMELL slightly different, but the taste difference is nearly the same.

So yes - as my hopper is fairly easy to dump.* I have, done some runs right after another.

Do the same with pork tenderloin and don't tell me - just let me taste - I can tell you what wood you used, or at least come pretty close. Especially hickory/oak v. pecan v. maple v. apple/alder. Same with coldish smoked salmon. Or cheese.


*Hahahahaha side story - when I emptied out the mesquite pellets a couple weeks ago, I threw them in the garden. I have no room for their taste!!

If you have FB, look up KJ's BBQ in Marysville. They carry Lumberjack pellets and many rubs including: frag out, meatchurch, killer hogs etc. Prices drop with the more you buy. I think they are $10/bag if you get 10 or more.

I've been wanting to try out the Bear Mountain Gourmet Blend --- it looks like a good mix in there....
Safeway has been having it on sale for $10 a bag --- really can't beat that price.
Gotta work down my stash of single flavors first before I try it....

I am still a dealer and while I am not over there a lot, I do get over that way. I will be making a trip up to Maple Falls in a week or two to pick up our daughter's car from the mechanic and I travel to Redmond a couple of times a month. If anyone is interested just let me know. I have been charging $10 for a 20# bag and $18 for 40# bags for now. i think prices wil be going up a bit in the future though as shipping has been creeping up.

Just reviving this because I got myself a pellet grill. I'm looking for 100% pure hickory or fruit wood, and not "100% hardwood" box of chocolate mix with oils like Traeger pellets. Anyone know of pure pellets other than Lumberjack?

I use Lumberjack Pellets, but do a google search. You will get an answer to your question much faster.

BBQ Island. Looks like they list both 100% flavor wood pellets and blends, and they list percentages in blends.

Thanks, this market is a bit frustrating because of the labeling of most manufacturers as blends or flavored pellets. Searching Hickory Pellets, you get non stop results of "Hickory. 100% All natural Hardowood." I found that Kingsford also advertises as 100% Hickory at a low price, but I've seen some mixed reviews of mostly people sticking with Lumber Jack or some anecdotes that it's not on the same level. Is the Kingsford Stuff pure, or any good?

You really have answered your own question as to what Pellet to use from your own research.
LumberJack.

After that? Bear Mountain if you want a cheaper option with a base Wood that works just fine. Safeway as JMB mentioned, i'm sure that same deal is at all of them.
