Johnie Walker Red Label. At $54 out the door for a 1/2 gallon at Costco it's bargain scotch. Not great, but a whole lot better than the Kirkland brand blended 12 year scotch for the same price. The Kirkland scotch is a big let down. Usually anything branded under Kirkland is hands down the best for the price, not the case with their scotch.

Yesterday, in the interest of science, I pitted the cheap bourbon against the REALLY cheap bourbon: Verdict: The cheap bourbon was definitely better, with a much more complex and mouth-filling taste. However, I'm still a fan of the really cheap bourbon because it's just really hard to beat at that price! Today I'm working a similar project, cheap Scotch against really cheap Scotch: Verdict: The really cheap Scotch wins. The cheap stuff is just kind of . . . blah and boring. I love science!

I got off work at a reasonable hour today, had an excuse to go to the gun store even though I didn't bring anything home, and in general I feel good going into the weekend. So, I'm celebrating with the Battle of the Cheap Bourbons! In the black corner we have an old favorite, the tried and true Evan Williams. Strong and sweet, I like this whiskey, and often grab it off the shelf even when the more expensive bottles are clustered around it. In the white corner is a newcomer to the MadPick arena, recommended by Mr. SAGELA himself. Rebel Yell can be found at Trader Joe's for $11.99 per 750ml, plus Washington state tax which is approximately $325. In the first round, the Evan Williams has a pretty good lead on points. I think the Rebel Yell is a little too blah for me, not interesting enough . . . but hey, it's still going down nicely. By the way, I had to ban Breck and DGM33 from this thread. The stress of seeing all of this cheap shit being consumed was getting to be too much for those distinguished fellers.

I like how basic the Rebel Yell is. Evan is a little too sweet for my tastes these days.
