There is a guy who owns a roasting company over on SGN. His name is Bruce(BigZDawg), not sure what company he owns. Suppose I could ask him and report here.

Bringing this back up to the top.

Its getting colder and coffee season is back. Time to trade the whiskey for breakfast for a cup of the black stuff!

For you DIY fellas, whats your preferred method? Machine, perk, press, etc?

Im no expert or pro on the subject of coffee, so Id like to learn a little from ya all.

Im a press user with a little different process.

Last hunting trip had a coffee shop serve me coffee roasted by Thomas Hammer in Spokane. By far the most robust and flavorful coffee I've had in a while. Recently bought an semi-auto expresso machine and have tried lost of different coffee.

Starbucks ITALIAN Roast is OK (The rest and in particular French Roast, SUCK ASS)

Some good coffees at Target, Archer branded in smallish bags, organic from around the world.

Yes they are all anti. Screw it, buy Korea tube instant coffee.

Is Larry still around?

I have been in Hawai’i a lot lately and have developed an affinity for Kaua’i Coffee.

Anthem coffee is roasted by Dilanos. They do a good job. There are a lot of local roasters (and some are great!). I've found that the best comes from BlueBeard or Valhalla in Tacoma, or Batdorf & Bronson in Olympia.

Most people enjoy coffee, but couldn't tell one from the other in blind test.

Here are some tips for getting great coffee:
1. Buy a single origin bean roasted between 3 and 7 days ago. Blends are... well, blends.
2. If you like your steak rare, but your coffee roasted dark, just go buy some Folgers.
3. Grind it yourself (with a burr grinder, not a bladed chopper). Do this as you use it, minutes before brewing it, not in advance.
4. Measure it out. 16:1. Not just a few scoops and a pot of water.
5. Use a pour over device (such as a Chemex, Hario, or Melitta), or a full emersion brew system such as a French Press or AeroPress. Preference to pour over.
6. If your coffee needs sugar or cream, it's not good. Start putting ketchup on your steak.

With a bean of decent quality, the roast, grind, and prep will have more impact on your cup than anything else. Subtle regional differences are great, but you can easily loose those by messing up any of the other steps. I *really* like coffee. If you want to get snobbed up on it, send me a PM and come on over.

Only thing I disagree with on this is buying roasted beans. Buy a roaster and purchase green beans. There is a lot of variation between beans, so experiment and find the one you like. Practice roasting to get the roast where you want it. There is a lot of personal preference in roast. And yeah, dark roast is code for “burnt.” The upfront cost is high, but I’m shocked at the prices paid for roasted beans. Green beans are surprisingly cheap. Long term, it’s got to be a coast savings.

The best cup of coffee I ever had was from an unknown origin bean that I roasted myself using a gas grill and a heat gun. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the absolute best way to get a perfect roast.

Over the years I've owned percolators, auto drip, auto espresso, press, etc.
Now I use a fully automatic assault coffee machine.
Delonghi Realto EAM 4500.
Best cup of coffee, espresso, or cappucino every time with the push of a button.

Image

One button options are single espresso, double espresso, long shot (cup of coffee),or cappucino/latte (just need to plug in the milk container, I store that in the fridge).

Maintenance: add beans, dump pucks, add water.
7+ long shots or 14 espresso shots before you run out of water or need to dump the pucks. Bit more than that before you have to add beans and dump the tray. ( I do it all at once)
Clean out the press module every few weeks (it cleans itself when you turn it on or when it shuts off after an hour.)
Adjustable hot water temp, coffee temp, amount of water, etc. Even tells you when it needs a descaling.
Even makes Charbucks taste good.

My girlfriend is from Germany, really gives that thing a workout. Must drink 8+ cups of coffee or tea per day.

The one I have is discontinued, got it for free and had to fix it.
But has been working strong for about 7 years or so,

The full autos are expensive.
The two features that really jack the price up:
Auto bean grinder, and auto milk frother.

I also have green coffee, if you'd rather roast your own.

Starbucks sucks on so many levels ! Weak and lousy tasting coffee, overpriced, if I ask for a large, don't try to teach me another language, just give me what I goddamn asked for...
Tried them twice, but when you can get a Dunkin' for half the price and stronger....
They did get in good cinnamon rolls tho...….. Liked going in with a cup of DD in my paw and order a cinnamon roll on the way to work.
For home brew Peets seems pretty good, Black Rifle is decent too, still trying all the little places around the PNW

Is there a Duinkin Donuts around here? My office keeps sending me gift cards for them. There coffee is passable - much better than Starsucks for sure.
