Propane anywhere around here can range from 2.50-3 a gallon. GOUGING. My wife's family runs a feed/hay supply and get about $1.75 a gallon.
A couple years ago I had the local propane shop replace a valve and recertify a larger tank. The guy was baffled why? He said he could sell me a new tank cheaper than the new valve and stamp. I didnt want his new light weight flimsy tank. He was just baffled. I then asked for my old valve back. He was baffled, "its useless" he says. Its my 5lbs of brass I told him. He was bummed.
Then he says, "filler up?". No, I said. He was baffled. He just could'nt understand why anyone would fix up an empty bottle. He scratched his head and asked, "are you filling it somewhere cheaper?" (he was 2.99/gallon) I said yes. He asked if he could fill if he matched it. I said it was $1.99 at the hardware store a couple miles down the street. He said, "no problem" and filled it for $1.99/gal.
To just drop off a buck a gallon and still clear the books is crazy. Lots of folks taking advantage of folks that dont know better with a BBQ.
Those tank exchanges are a ripoff to.

I seem to remember $1.99 last fall. Was I wrong?

One of my clients owns an industrial rental company, was late paying me. So they agreed to fill up my six 20 pound BBQ tanks for free instead of paying me interest.
I had an electronic gauge on my BBQ that fit inline off the tank, but half the time it didn't work and sometimes it leaked. Pitched it.
When Lowes has a sale/rebate you can get a Blue Rhino exchange for $12 after rebate.

The pressure gauges are not accurate as propane maintains a fairly constant pressure until it's almost empty. The tape that goes on the side is not very reliable either. The best way on small tanks is by weight. Small Bluetooth or wifi scales can be bought that will let you know when it's getting close to empty and can also show usage over time.

How much should the tank weigh? 38 lbs. for a full 20 lb. size propane tank, 18 lbs. if empty. 54 lbs. for a full 30 lb. size propane tank, 24 lbs. if empty. 70 lbs. for a full 40 lb. size propane tank, 29 lbs. if empty.
What size is my propane tank? 18 inches high and 12.5 inches diameter for a 20 lb. propane tank 24 inches high and 12.5 inches diameter for a 30 lb. propane tank 29 inches high and 12.5 inches in diameter for a 40 lb. propane tank
YES! Now I will get the weight scale.

YES! Now I will get the weight scale. Seems like a lot of work... Just buy a 2nd tank (even if it's a smaller one), and use that as a backup. When the big one runs dry, swap, then over the next week or 2 refill the big one. Rinse and repeat.

Reason I'm asking is because I've read more than a few places are not completely filling and calling it full, therefore ripping you off. Well, if you get it refilled then you pay by the gallon, so even if they don’t completely fill it then you aren’t getting ripped off. Am I misunderstanding? Ah so grasshopper but are they rounding up or down, by the gallon? Why are you filling up small tanks when it's way easier to just do an exchange? Exchanging is where you get ripped off. They artificially kept the price down by not filling them all the way. I do an exchange every few years to get a nice new tank. Fill, do not exchange! http://www.theclassactionnews.com/consu ... n-lawsuit/"Fast forward a few years and the 20 lb propane tank is now being filled with 15 pounds, not 17 and defiantly not 20. Perhaps this was caused by BR paying millions of dollars out due to the lawsuit in addition to higher operation costs? I can only speculate. Now, the once “20 lb tank”, as they are commonly referred to as, contains 15 lbs of actual propane. It is clearly labeled on the plastic wrapper surrounding the bottle so if you read the label you will not be deceived." https://www.homeandautorepair.com/blue- ... ane-tanks/

To each their own. I would gladly exchange a tank and be on my way in less than 5 minutes instead of waiting upwards of 30 minutes to wait for an attendant to become free.

Where the heck are you going for your tanks? Getting mine filled usually takes less time than an exchange. "Uh let me see who has the keys to the cage." I park right by the pump, and only have to lift it out of my trunk. I get a FULL tank for about $5+ less than the exchange. Also th OP has a 30# tank, he can't exchange.
