I'm a bit confused..... how does a pellet grill 'pop'? I don't understand how this happens....

I don't fully understand it either, but it's a real thing. It starts when the grill gets starved for pellets, usually if you're running out, but in my case because the auger apparently was stuck. Then there's a big rush of pellets (you fill the hopper, or the auger gets unstuck), and when that big rush of pellets hits the fire pot then POP it goes.

I don't understand exactly how a big pile of pellets causes a pop like that, though....

Interesting.... I wonder if it is because there is a huge build up of smoke and then a flame starts causing a 'flash over' or 'back draft' scenario? Seems hard to imagine if the fan is running tho....

Sometimes caused by pellet degradation from moisture. Rather than incremental pellet feed there is more of a continuous stream and back flash if the pellet stream is dried out. Smoke was Most likely a moist clump. Stoppage was bound on squished pellets. Most pellet smokers handle it ok. Traegers burn your house down.

Yeah - I've heard about the back burns in the augers and the hoppers burning up, but I haven't heard to the 'popping' thing before.....

I was having so much fun with Steve's hair on fire video I didn't actually hear the pop. Was it a rapid burn noise or a mechanical noise?

That's a lot of smoke :ROFLMAO: :rofl9:

The video didn't catch the initial explosion. It was a loud banging, which was probably more the lid slamming up and down than anything. It was just a few feet behind my head, though on the other side of the house wall . . . I swear, I almost pulled my gun.

what pellets you using? you most likely had a flash over.....afew pellets at a time ignited. your track line could have had a little debris which prevented the pellets to glide when it got unstuck say 5 at a time in the pot got lit.

This. Most briquet burners who switch to pellets need a stoppage or three to tell them periodic maintenance is not an option.

The nice thing is how quick and simple it really is to clean.

The same thing can happen in a pellet stove. Not burning enough and fills the chamber with flammable smoke. When it does light off it can go boom. With my Camp Chef they say it's most likely to happen at startup, and must always be started with the lid open until it's fully burning. Proper adjustment of the air gap on the chimney cap is supposed to play a role as well.

With the Pitboss grill they warn you to leave the lid open when igniting The second time I used mine I forgot and fired it up a few minutes later it didn`t pop it boomed and the lid came up about 5 inches and slammed shut while I was standing only 2 feet away. I almost shit my pants and I can guarantee I will never forget to lift the lid while lighting again
