Some relatives are visiting from the flatlands of the Midwest. Among other things they’d enjoy seeing rivers with any spawning fish. While I’d love to fish too, it would be fine if we could only watch due to closures. Anywhere within three hours of Puyallup would be ideal. They’ll be here for the first week of August.

Also, any suggestions for quiet canoe lakes would be welcome. Leech Lake looks appealing. Mowich Lake looks good too.

This is worth the trip. The underwater viewing room is great to see the fish swimming. If it's a meh day, you'll get to see some boats transiting the locks, which is fun to watch. If it's a great day, you'll get to see someone without a clue trying to transit the locks and that's entertainment.

I don’t have an Oregon carry permit, and don’t want to go anywhere near Portland without one.

Although it’s the wrong time of the year others may want to think about watching a stream full of Kokenee that spawn in Speelyai creek off of Lake Merwin which is accessible from Woodland In October.
I have seen it many times and it is a spectacular sight to see so many green headed red bodied fish albeit they are miniature sockeye salmon.

If you're near Olympia, there is a fish passage with great viewing right in downtown, where the sound meets up with Capital Lake. You can also watch the seals massacre the salmon there.
