Are you out of the game???

Yeah. I still have all my equipment and colors. I've just been finally doing my own stuff that I need to take some pics of. :ROFLMAO: I've also been helping another gunsmith/buddy of mine get going with Cerakote.

Something something...Cerakote is good for more than guns....something something...needed some Facebook friendly media....something something....experimenting with a different prep process....something something... Actually, you know what? You're right! And she's got to be stuck in the house with me for days at a time now.

I decided to put together a low tech demo of unfinished and refinished clamps. Here’s the skinny. I degreased and blasted three clamps. One was left unfinished. One was parkerized. One was parkerized and Cerakoted. I’ve left them outside for 16 days and periodically checked on them. We’ve had a couple days of rain mixed in.

Why? People ask about how well it performs so I’m putting together demos. Here’s another.

A friend asked me how well it holds up to muzzle blast. Here’s some before and after of the muzzle device on my 458 SOCOM that had not been cleaned since sometime last year. I just cleaned it yesterday.

Interesting demo with the clamps. thumbsup

Why did you parkerize plus Cerakote the right-side one, instead of just Cerakote?

Honestly, I had the time to experiment so I did. There’s been enough back and forth about whether or not a park finish creates a better surface for adhesion that I wanted to do it myself and see for myself. When Cerakote isn’t applied properly, or the surface isn’t prepped properly it appears easy to tell from what I’ve seen. Even asking Cerakote directly they did not recommend park before coating. Understandably so, because why would you say your finish product needs another finish product to be the best in the industry? However, saying that a parked surface creates a better surface for Cerakote can’t possibly be true because a substrate can be parked without the Cerakote recommend blasting. Example, you can prep for park by blasting with sand or glass beads and have a smooth finish but, if you apply Cerakote to a sand or glass bead blasted substrate, Cerakote won’t perform as advertised. It will in fact fail. BUT, you can blast as recommended by Cerakote and then park and so far, it will perform.

A couple other things along that vein.

Thinking of a prepped surface as a canvas for paint, which is going to show through more? A white or light grey canvas, or a black canvas? I noticed that the Midnight color appears darker on the parked items than it did when I applied it to unparked items in the past.

Lastly, this particular formula for parking says to blast three times and wipe off three time with WD40 immediately after removing from the bath. Well as you can imagine, Cerakote will not perform as advertised when there’s lube/oil/gunk on the surface or that comes up the surface during heating or curing. So the next experiment will include rinsing the part in water after the park bath before coating. For the clamp in this experiment, I did as directed and then degreased a day later before applying Cerakote.
