NWRed just wanted to try his hand at something that didn't involve concrete. :ROFLMAO:

I’ve never seen a gate designed to make the corner turn like that. Very impressive!!

I can't tell from the video, is the red post near the corner all that keeps the gate upright?

no, the 90 degree turn is what keeps the gate up. when it's fully opened or closed it leans a little due to the weight and offset caster wheels.

the red posts on both sides of the openings were put in to keep the gate upright if it got hit and knocked off the track.

prolly 4 yards of concrete in the posts, the 16" wide curb for the track, 4" tall curb between the posts under the wood
fence etc

but there was a hell of a lot more welding involved than I'd ever done before

That is the plan, due to the corner, it'll need to be a rack and pinion driven opener, not a chain. It'll take some work to get the rack to work around the corner, but it's been done before, plenty of videos on youtube of powered "around the corner gates"

It looks like a chain style opener would work to me? Its basically a garage door on its side, right?

Nice job!

to get it to open fully ,I'd need the opener positioned about 15' past the end of the gate in the closed position . I haven't figured out a way to run a chain driven opener attached to the very end of the gate - it would pull it open but wouldn't push it closed . a straight sliding gate has the chain attached to both ends and the gear box is fixed and pulls and pushes the gate back and forth.

rack and pinion style openers are available and the racks are mounted in sections to the gate, cutting the sections into 2' lengths is doable, it's just going to come down to making them line up as it comes through the corner so there isn't a huge gap and it doesn't bind up :thumbsup2:
