M923a2 I got from local auction. High bid $7100, almost 2k$ in taxes/fees/transport costs..

Going from 1100s on my M934 to 1400s on the A2.... holy crap. It's only like 3 inches but it feels like it's a good foot higher trying to climb up there.. I'll be adding a step.. I know it doesn't look like much, but keep in mind that bed is nearly at eye level to me.. and I'm 6'2"...
I also now know why people love the 8.3
Near silent compared to the NHC250. I was having a just above normal conversation level right at the cab before it hit me how quiet it was... I'd have to be yelling if it was a 250.
Been having a blast working out issues.
Transfer case was a $&+(" to switch between ranges. Solenoid worked, air was venting, still had to wrestle with it. Pulled solenoid.. So, is this supposed to be loose, or captive? It was just hanging in there loose..

Next was the removal of air to the solenoid and removing the front axle low range cut in.
My air line was literally an inch short... so I had to use 2 unions and a short jumper. Eventually I'll run a dedicated line from dash switch to front axle.

Also noticed it's missing the fuel transducer... after finding a plug with nothing connected to it and doing some research.
ABS light is still on. No clickety clack when I got it.
Pulled 3A fuse, it was good....Plugged it back in.. It clickety clacks now...
Can't find 15A fuse... still looking. It was a FD truck and they basically cut any wires to quickly get lights and radios out.
Gotta patch or fill screw holes in roof from lightbar. Also gotta trace and remove residual wiring that they didn't remove.
I got the remainder of the GO coming in within the next few days so I'll have all the fluids for a complete fluid refresh. Oil, trans, transfer case, diffs, and coolant..

Had some parts that were gonna be put on the deuce but never put them on, so onto the 5 ton they go..
After letting it cool down a bit...
LED headlights, parking lamps, and turn signal lamps.
Also, for future reference, probably a good idea to stop trying to unscrew something that feels like it's gonna break, because, it's probably gonna break..
I spritzed everything with a plastic safe penetrating fluid, so the brake/tail lens screws and passenger front lens screws should be free by morning. The rears looked almost new, and so did the driver side, but the passenger side almost looks like they replaced the screws with zinc instead of the stainless, brass, galvanized, or whatever the factory screws.

I wanted to add a step to my truck. Wire rope steps look great, but the ones I could find were either WAY too expensive, or not strong enough/mostly for looks.
The step used on the LMTV is great, except it's built into the box.

The closest equivalent has shit reviews...

So.. I decided to try and engineer my own.. using 5/16 all thread and a piece of tread step. I figured the 5/16 can handle the load no issue, and if I hit something, it'll just bend out of the way I can bend it back, or it'll snap off, but it's kinda designed to be sacrificed..
I tried 5/16 all thread but it wanted to bend/push in.
I bought eye rings and chains rated for 1K lbs...figuring if I crossed the chains they'd be tighter and would limit lateral motion. Nope. Didn't help.
I ended up just leaving the chains there, since they actually work, then bolting on steel reinforcements to keep it from moving inward.

I was hoping to get something that would either A)not destroy itself or B) not destroy everything else, if it went over a terrain obstacle.... I'm hoping it shears the bolts and allows it to flex, but based on the thickness of steel I used, I fear it's gonna tear a bunch of stuff apart.
So, I now have more money into the steps, than just buying the 'good' steps....
I think I'm gonna talk to a local shop to see if they can make cable steps that will just weld together... seems pretty easy to construct..

I have used both styles over the years with no complaints in their correct applications.
Rubber version is only rated to 250lb.

So, air is now holding instead of bleeding down. I think that was due to the stuck transfer case switch, which uses air.
Still a bitch to switch ranges, but at least it's actually moving under its own steam now. Still have a ticking I have to nail down. Seems to pop up more under load and at idle in N. In drive and at speeds above idle under no load seems to disappear. It does follow rpm though.
I'm thinking exhaust leak. Given this is a turbo based engine, that needs to be fixed.
I'll post a video as soon as I can get it uploaded.

FD removed the blackout light to install a siren speaker. I got a fire truck airhorn that I was gonna put in the same spot, but needed to open the hole a bit. I checked both sides and.... there was room.... to miss the wiring harness that was there....
Attachment:

.....until there wasn't..... because I angled the blade in.... and sliced through the wiring harness... in 2 places..... clean through....
Had to spend 45 minutes tracing everything out....and temporarily connecting things.... Now I gotta put the right connectors on there and reseal them... THEN I'll be able to move on to adding the air horn.

So, not exactly how I wanted it, but to center it in the hole would've meant hours of fabrication...so... this should be OK... Stainless hardware, K-loks, and threadlocker. It shouldn't be going anywhere.
Now I gotta figure out what I want to do with the rest of the hole. Maybe a pseudo blackout drive light?
Yes, I still need to remount the solenoid, and run the air line.

Last night was fun. What should have been a 15 minute oil change turned into a multi-hour debacle.
I gathered all my supplies to change the oil...
I ordered the 'long' oil filter, because extra filtration is better, right? Not when it's too long to fit where it needs to go. There's $60 down the drain ( I ordered 2, non-returnable)....and on top of that, while I can order the right filter for $35, it won't be here until next Wednesday, so if I don't want this truck deadlined for the next week, I'm spending another $50 for a filter from a local shop.

Pulled plug out, let oil drain, easy peasy... go to put new plug in and *kerplunk*... right into the now foot deep pan of oil....Fish it out..... get it installed.... For some reason I was thinking the drain was on the back of the pan, but it's on the side... .so it sticks out farther than I might be comfortable with.... I'm thinking I might have to build a shield for it..... and yes, I'm getting a cap for it.

Then I go try to drain the oil into my barrel - A funnel which holds about a gallon decides it doesn't want to live in the hole anymore and falls over, spilling a gallon+ of oil all over the place.. Luckily it's dry dirt so it'll soak up pretty quick, but the barrel is now completely covered with oil.... *sigh*
Oh, and it takes 18.9L or 20 qts. .. The 5 gallon pail of full synthetic 15w40 isn't actually 5 gallons.. It's 4.75 gallons... which is 18L... so I gotta put another liter of oil in there either from another 5 gallon jug or more likely just grab a quart from the store since the smallest amount of oil I have on hand is 2.5 gallon jugs. 1 qt is $8, 4.75 gallons was ~$65.
My last 5 ton had an NHC250 that took 27 quarts, so I guess I should be thankful I'm using almost 2 gallons fewer per oil change.

Was even better as during similar on kids rx8 found the fancy drain plug like yours hit a bulge in oil pan and was not tight like we thought. Leaked after put 1st quart in.... Of course the catch pan was already on drum draining not under the car.....

Couple minor issues I found that need to be addressed. Brakes are sticking, which is normal considering the saltwater environment it came from, and not being drive often enough.
Got to test out my fire truck horn. Yup, it works, and it's a much needed improvement.
Today I drained and refilled all 3 axles and the transfer case... Only about 11 gallons of gear oil.. I love that just about everything takes the same fluid. Technically, it could be 2, if I wanted to keep oil in the transmission, but it's getting swapped out to dex3 as soon as the filter comes in.
These are so stupid simple to work on, I love it. Crawled underneath, 1/2" square drive to remove fill port, same 1/2" square drive for drain....
Have an air pressurized dispenser that spits out the gear oil with the quickness. While it took me about 2 hours, it probably would take a normal guy in better shape about half that to do all of it.... and could probably be cut down to 30-45 mins if you had 4 drain pans..
No jacks required... just crawl underneath... :D

Crawl under the truck....notice a bit of a light oily film on the trans pan, indicating a small leak somewhere.
Pull drain plug. Looks like they put dex3 in there but didn't complete the switchover from 15w40/10wt (whatever they had in there). So it's mostly dex3 but clearly contaminated with oil.

Little over 4 gallons of fluid comes out, which is normal amount.
Go to loosen drain pan... and I swear every damn bolt is a hair over hand tight. Just comes right out. I think I found the source of the leak.
Then I go to pull the regulator filter screen.. Pull it out, go to grab the O-ring and....Amazon sent me 100 teeny-tiny O-rings, instead of 20 of the O-rings I ordered.
Motherfuckers.

Some knuckles take an entire tube just by themselves...
Originally I was looking at an air powered grease gun. Truck has onboard air, so... Easy choice, right?
Eh. Not so much, once I priced them out. The difference between a high quality pneumatic grease gun and M18 grease gun was less than I thought.
I opted for a Milwaukee M18 grease gun and a Lock n Lube coupler. Both seem to have excellent reviews. I'm already invested in Red tools and batteries, so another tool in that family makes sense.
4' long line and nothing to drag around behind me just made sense.
$235 for grease gun kit w/batt + charge (Would have been ~$200 for just the grease gun) $147 for pail o' grease $35 for lock n lube coupler.
Shit adds up, QUICKLY.
So far, I'm in it over a grand, just in fluids/chemicals!
