My shop vac crapped out a few days ago. Took it apart today and found the internal fuse burned out

Good news: The motor is probably ok
Bad news: It’s old enough that I can’t find parts based on the model number

It also looks like the jankiest fuse setup I’ve seen and the plastic holding it in cracked apart

It looks like there was a piece of solder or really soft metal being held between the contacts

So. Now I’m wondering what to replace it with and how to size it. Some sort of thermal switch or circuit breaker that resets after cooling down would be ideal

If you can't make it go, it's done, anyway... So...

Run the wires outside the case.

Add a cheap automotive inline fuse holder.

Put in a 5 amp fuse. If it blows right away, put in a 10 amp. Etc. (Or just figure out the amperage of the motor in the first place, and fuse accordingly.)

Easy replacement if it does it again. And whatever life you get out of it, is more than what you have right now.

It’s a 12A motor so a 15A fuse would be the right size

I ended up just putting one inside the case for now. We’ll see how long it lasts

Congrats on not being a sheep and just buying a new vac because of this fuse.

BTW a .22 is more exciting when it blows. :wink05: :ROFLMAO:

Thanks

Got it back together and it's running fine. Actually better than it was since I cleaned and lubed the bearings

The original 'fuse' blew when I was blasting a bunch of stuff in the cabinet and had it running for most of the day. Don't expect to be doing that for a while so I should be good
