I'm a better grinder than welder too. Part of it is my crappy canadian tire welder, but it's mostly me

If you a bad welder then grinding it to make it look better is probably the worst thing you can do if its structural.

Most times bad welders dont get good penetration, and then the weld (possibly ugly) is laying on top. Then they grind it to remove the ugly, and in the process removing the small amount of strength they had also.

A good hot weld should be almost below or flush with the surface.

As long as you have access to a good brand of structural enamel.

Took a welding class in college, had some hillbilly inlaws that welded shit that actually blew up, but other than that I don't know much about welding.

Looks good to me, unless it's going to support people over an otherwise hazardous environment.
Then I'd check it out some more.

I thought it looked good.
