Not the first time a motor was needed to get the job done...
Just sayin...

However, when it comes time to finish up an 870 project, I will use the mini mill but, not under motor power. I’m not that bold.
I asked because even with a tap handle, it can be hard to make sure it starts straight. They make spring loaded tap centers that will keep that tap handle straight when it starts. Tapping under power isn't as scary as it sounds. Just need a bit of practice. The tap center would be a big help for you though.

Ugh. Chinese taps.
Tried using a Harbor Freight special in my 88 Suburban to fix a stripped out seat bolt hole. They are very hard, but very brittle. When they break off, you can't drill them out. Too hard. Had to drill and thread another hole with a better tap.

If this was needing to be a precise cut, I would have done it all at the mill but, it just needed threads and it’s just a gas block. The customer was going to toss it but, I told him it’s worth the work as those gas blocks are $50 and it wouldn’t cost him anything for me to rethread the hole since I had to drill the bit and set screw out to remove it and perform his requested services.
So five bucks and few minutes of my time leads to him coming back with more work tomorrow.
Yes. Throw the tap guide jn your drill chuck/collet. Tap goes into that tap handle, or standard tap handle. Some taps over say .375 or so may have a dimple in the tap itself. Center tap and handle as best you can, bring down guide letting tip center in the handle or tap. Bring it down so the spring is collapsed enough to keep tension on it. Turn tap handle. Straight threads!
