Garage opening doesn’t have LRPs But we don’t have earthquakes in Kentucky. I don’t know how far inland those requirements go

Are the seismic requirements the same in AZ? We are not in the same seismic zone as CA, I don't think we have any special seismic requirements We built the shop the same way we would have in the NW

IBC Table 16.13.2.1(1) & (2) has seismic shift data. AZ has some movement and epicenter locations. KY is nada, nothing, flat. No seismic (except for fracking).

time for an update, my friend who is the contractor is in Oregon working for the summer and we are working through some issues with the permits on the pool house, in the mean time we started work again on the shade structure and landscaping I have been working to fill in this corner with dirt, about 18" or so, one wheelbarrow load at a time

Time for an update I didn't get a permit for the pool house because it was only 12 sq ft over the allowed size that you don't need a permit, well they red tagged me and made me get one. So, I made my own drawings and submitted them along with the application, only to find out my whole backyard is in a FEMA flood zone. There is a 1% chance that my backyard could flood. When they first told me this they said I would have to take down the pool house, told the wife I would get an attorney and sue, I was pissed.......I was not told when I bought the house there would be an issue. fast forward a couple of weeks and I finally get to talk to someone at the county who knows what is what and he told me I could "flood proof" the building by adding "flood vents" to allow water to pass through during a flood. This supposed flood isn't feet of water, it is inches of water. I also have to raise the outlets above 2 feet and trade out the insulation and wall coverings with different material (foam insulation and steel corrugated roofing). Anyway, he helped me come up with a plan, I modified the drawings and now am awaiting approval from the county, which should be any day. They also made me remove my shade structure / pergola, said it was too close to the property line, I asked for a definition of "structure" because this had no walls or roof, they wouldn't listen to my argument. I will simply install a shade sail in place of the wood, nothing they can do about that.

I am sure it is against the law, probably considered bribery. But you need to treat that last guy to dinner or a beer or whatever. Hard to find People like that in Govt/permitting positions that want to help people build their dream and not tear it down or make life difficult.
Good news to hear there is a plan. inconvenient for sure, but something you can work with.

That sucks when you move to a “freer” state only to be met by the man again.
The pergola at the property line is a confusing one, since technically your block wall is also a structure then… and ON the property line.
Would they allow a surface mounted pergola / gazebo? Something along the lines of what Costco sells? If so….

I am fine with the shade sail, they are inexpensive, easy to take down and last several years, even in our hot sun. The people working for the county are probably from California......
