I know, I know, that horse is already out of the barn, but it gets hot enough here sometimes that I seems like it could be worth it. Have any of you made a swamp cooler? Was it worth it? Any pitfalls or gotchas I should look out for? The biggest question is it sufficient to actually cool a room (not looking to do the whole house, just our bedroom or den)? Or would it be wiser to just buy commercial (starting at about $200+ for ones that seem like they might be worth it) or not?

I'm working from the plans here: https://offgridsurvival.com/offgrid-air ... ir-cooler/

I've got almost all the pieces sourced in Amazon for around $50, minus the bucket because I already have some of those. Mine will be all 12 volt so I can use it on the boat if I want to.

The bill of materials calls for a few things I already have like extra window screen material, nuts, bolts, screws, glue, etc. Here's the list of stuff I don't have handy.

5/16" ID Tubing: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0751252RD/?c ... _lig_dp_it

5/16" OD Three-way barbed Tees: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RCNH783/?c ... _lig_dp_it

5" PVC Elbow: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NNWTJD9/?c ... _lig_dp_it

I am following you!

I know I know....we have a fancy HVAC system, but on Sat, no power....9500W gen, well even that won't drive a 3T-4T+ system., so some set-up like that........isolated.........cool!

I built one for my greenhouse out of a 2’ box fan, a wallpaper trough, fiberglass furnace pre filter, an old pump out of a fountain and some soaker hose. Mounted low and in the shade with 2 more box fans up high for exhaust.
Keeps the temp under 90 even through this heat

This design looks pretty clean. No PVC elbow to mess with.

Yeah, his is another video I've watched a half a dozen times. Thanks.

I think the elbow will make it easier to direct the flow or potentially attach a dryer vent hose to so I can pipe the cooler air where I want to.

In my house I'll run it off of a repurposed server power supply, on the boat or truck a cigarette lighter plug.

Does that larger fan move some air? Really most PC fans hardly move much air.

According tho the Amazon reviews it puts out a shitload of air. Some described it as "overkill" and "finger shredder". We'll see. Everything should get here on Friday.

You already made a hash of it. I have some nice mesh for it, kinda non restrictive.

I made one a couple months ago using an old sixpack size ice chest. Plugs into the cigarette lighter socket. I use it to cool my cat so I can leave sooner in this heat. I was resoldering the power cord tonight and the factory wires on the plug were crap. I toss in some frozen hot dogs and a bit of water or a chunk of ice and water so Mooch has a cool breeze on her when it is this damned hot. Will be using it in a few hours to get back to the cabin a bit sooner.

Swamp coolers work ok when the humidity is low.
