I use vegetable oil on all my knives and bone axe, whether a stone or ceramic.
Don't have the smell, washes off easily and won't stain clothes, and wipes off my leather chair if I happen to be making an edge while watching tv.
Keep the axe angle at minimum so it will split the pelvis and any other bones yet still be sharp enough to use for skinning.

I think I like that idea the best, especially when going hunting.

Mineral oil.

If you are in a pinch, baby oil. Same thing, just has that baby smell added to it.
