Just found out that it has been sitting for 5+ years... not 3+.

The batteries were disconnected but that won't save them.

I had NO idea that batteries for this thing run around $120 each!!! times 6!! Yikes...$800 or so after tax...

Frickin golf... :angryfire: Cow pasture pool...thats what my Grandpa called it... :ROFLMAO:

Don,
Let me know if you need parts, there is a Club Car dealer just down the hill from my house (I might still know the guy who runs the place)

as for Batteries I don't get any deals (at least not anymore), so I can't help you there.

Do the epsom salt treatment, you cheap old bastard - which is why I suggested it to begin with.

Because I am a cheap old bastard as well.

And, it really does work - you can get a couple more years out of those batteries, no problem.

Looks like the Epsom salt trick is a very short term solution.

Go old school. Get a cheap Hydrometer from an auto parts store that will give you the specific gravity (S/G) for the electrolyte in each cell. Check each one, recording the S/G for each. A fully charged battery (lead/acid) has an S/G of 1.265 @ 80 degrees (internal temp).

Charge the shit out of the batteries, and do the S/G test. If you have more than "30 points" between cells when testing.

You might just be able to salvage one or two of the existing batteries.

BTW, check out Costco. They have 6V golf cart batteries (deep cycle) as a rule. The RV crowd snaps them up to run their TV's etc on their travel trailers. More capacity in 2 6V golf cart bats. as a rule than in one 12V.

Another "Old school" test is to take two stainless steel screws or bolts (small dia). Connect the Voltmeter leads, one to each,

Open up the battery cells and with the voltmeter set to read at least 2.2 V, measure the voltage between each cell by inserting the ss screws/bolts into the electrolyte. Just touch the liquid, don't touch the internal plates. 1/8" is all you need.

Compare the voltage readings for each cell. A fully charged Lead/Acid battery cell should read about 2.2V @80 degrees (internal).

These are a few of the methods used "back in the day" when I was working my way through school in a service station.

BTW, only put Epsom Salts in a battery you want to destroy. :whatthe:

BTW, did you do the obvious first? Clean and tighten all connections??? (If you did and I missed it, might want to recheck) You'd be amazed at how many battery problems come from the oxide buildup on the posts and connections).

I've heard the italics part before, but is there double the capacity in two 6v batteries (to make them cost effective versus buying one 12v)?

My rig is set up to take one 12 or two 6s:

12v, 2hp Bosch motor, 5 speeds forward, 1 reverse, plus neutral, Dynamic (electrical) braking plus a disc brake
232 lbs. including batteries - gross capacity 500 lbs.
14 miles per hour (max)
60 mile range (depending upon terrain and load, with two 6v batteries)

There's an overlooked factor. If you draw down a 12 V battery below the 50% mark (capacity) it's life is shortened drastically, even the deep cycle batteries (they just don't die as fast).

If you compare an Interstate Batteries 6-V golf cart battery it has a 232 AH cap (20 amp rate). A single 12V golf cart battery has only a 155 AH capacity (20 amp rate) or 2/3rds that of the series's 6V's. (two batteries in series will only double voltage, not storage capacity)

If you use the "Same" amount of "Juice" from a pair of series connected 6 V batteries you will not use as much of the total capacity as if you used a single 12 V Golf cart battery.

Also, do not confuse true Deep Cycle Batteries like those used in Golf Carts with the "Dual Use" Deep Cycle batteries designed for boats. The golf cart battery has heavier plates, better insulators between them, and more electrolyte capacity. The dual use is lighter in it's construction, has thinner separators, and is designed to still give you enough "Poop" to start a motor (usually an outboard).

There's no free lunch. If you want good batteries for a Golf Cart or Solar Power Storage bank, you need the ones that cost more. The cost effectiveness comes from not having to replace them as often. I use true deep cycle batteries with my Travel Trailer. Two 6v's that are about 6" taller than the average auto/marine battery.

Also, accept the fact that deep cycle batteries use more water than our car batteries. If you want them to last, DISTILLED WATER ONLY!

The batteries may NOT be the problem.......
I work with golf carts alot. Corrosion on the connector wires are the #1 problem. Remove and check ALL of the wires connected to the batrteries (one at a time of course). If there is corrosion going under the insulation ...REPLACE.
As for cheap batteries...batteries plus got me a set for $175 +tax.
They are deep cycle so sitting does not kill them as fast as regular lead/acid.
Clean/replace wires first...then test batteries.
