When opening the garage door https://mechanicguides.com/best-garage-door-rollers/ just before the door finishes opening there is a noticeable squeak. It happens at the same point every time. I am wondering since it only squeaks one time if this is an issue besides it needing to be greased. If it was an issue with the track needing to be greased wouldn't it make noise every time one of the wheels crosses that part? I am wondering if the door is coming off the track or a wheel needs to be replaced. Has anyone had a similar issue?

I took apart the spring for the garage door in my Lynnwood house. I swore if I ever got it working I would never fuck with a garage door again. I wouldn't worry about it.
It could be wood on wood contact of the door panels due to humidity or temperature.

If it can't be fixed with lube, I call a dude. Relatively inexpensive.

From New Jersey, joined Dec 20th and first post is about a squeaky garage door? But, I guess I'll play: weak, breaking or broken link on the drive chain?

Welcome to WaGuns! How did you find us while in NJ? Bevileng wrote: When opening the garage door just before the door finishes opening there is a noticeable squeak. It happens at the same point every time.

If it was an issue with the track needing to be greased wouldn't it make noise every time one of the wheels crosses that part? I've never had to grease a garage door track... Is your garage door a standard segmented door with wheels in each segment? Bevileng wrote: I am wondering if the door is coming off the track or a wheel needs to be replaced.
Has anyone had a similar issue? I don't recall ever having a garage door that didn't make a louder noise at some point in its travel... Maybe that makes me have a high tolerance. If the noise happens at the same place, have your hand ready at the switch and stop it right as it starts to make the noise, then hand over hand inspect where each of the wheels is. If you see nothing with the wheels in the track, look for other contact points.

I'm deaf in no ears and sometimes short high frequency sounds can be exceedingly difficult to locate. Think waffle maker timer, battery dying - change me signal, in the kitchen appliance house with door closed. We both thought we were losing it.....weird noise to begin with. I'm thinking a 10 year old would have found it in seconds, old age thing.

My son owns a garage door company. Most common causes of squeaks are Torsion springs not properly lubed. A thin line of oil applied across he top at least annually will stop most. Like I said, a THIN line of oil. Too much will end up dripping down the front of the door. Oil will work into rest of the spring as door is operated. Grease the rail that the door opener shuttle/trolley moves on. Best to apply to surfaces with a throw away paint brush so you don't get globs that will then fall on vehicle. Make sure side tracks are properly aligned. Look at roller shaft ends and make sure they protrude from the hinges the same amount from when the door is closed to when fully open. Sometimes the tracks are too close together on the overhead portion at the end and the rollers bottom out. Some dry lube spray inside the track surface might help. Likewise some dry lube spray on the cables and cable drum on each end of the torsion spring rod. Hinges need a drop of oil from time to time. If door is a metal door it's a good idea to close door, loosen alll mounting screws on all hinges, give door a good shake, then re-tighten hinges. If you plan on doing anything with the torsion springs BEWARE. If you don't know what you are doing and don't have the proper tools those suckers can put you in a world of hurt, even kill. This is why Garage Door Service workers have one of the highest Workman's Comp rate in the State of Washington. (I used to pay the Dept of Labor when I was doing his accounting). Broken bones in hands, arms, faces, are very common when things go wrong. FWIW, the door opener rail is the most neglected item on a garage door (if electric opener is used). 8 out of 10 repair orders I processed into invoices had "dry operator rail" listed as one of the problems. As for garage door problems at my house? I just call my "garage door guy" A service call for everyone else runs from $85 to $120 and it then gets done right.

That was a lot of good helpful info right there. I hadn't thought of the torsion springs squeaking. Thanks Mike!
