Whenever a firearm is reported stolen, the victim should submit the serial to http://www.hotgunz.com/. If you are thinking of purchasing a gun, look it up! It's free and takes seconds. While it's an underused resource, it is just one more way that you can hopefully retrieve your stolen asset or CYA before a sale.

These are the same people that post lists and photos of their guns on a forum.

The latter. We are not privy to any online shared LEO resources.

The only national database for stolen guns is run by the feds, and only accessible to law enforcement agencies. It also relies on departments to report the stolen items, so if some two man department in the middle of nowhere takes a week or two to report the stolen guns, it won't show up for at least that long. This is better than nothing, and at least gives you a chance. Best thing is to make it known to everyone you can, and have them pass it on... like that old shampoo commercial.. you tell two people and they tell two people, and so on.
