I like the mixture of wood and metal work in a project like this. I may have to give it a go for one of m y j-frames

Qwerstcheons:

I know SA selects a specific grain and orientation for their stocks (rifles; I believe this is even a military spec?)

I suspect grain orientation is more important on a long gun where grain can affect the movement of the wood (again, posed as a question) and where a stock might be employed as a ram/cudgel/bat....

Was the direction of the grain any part of your consideration in working the material? In performance/strength of the material?

Aesthetics? I could see where different orientations would emphasize different lines or proportions.

for grip panels like these, it is purely aesthetics. For a rifle stock the grain direction is very important.

Interesting read, Casey! Good stuff.

I was a little confused by the last one. I expected it to be about poor-quality finishes (flaking off, etc.) but it sounds like you're just talking about color choices ... which doesn't really fit with the theme, IMHO.

Anyway, I've seen some of those issues, and caused a couple myself.

actually it is both....I bought a shotgun once that the previous owner simply spray painted the whole gun, no taping anything off, no rag in the ejection part, no dis-assembly, and of-course he painted in gloss black :timeout:

The two I showed were not only bad color choices, but just looked like crap...but then I prefer the look of blued steel and wood

Don't know if you use it or if any of the other smith's and hobbyists here do, but the Dunn Lumber in Kirkland has a couple or three gallon tins of boiled lindseed oil in the close-out bin for 12 bucks a piece.

Case are all of these projects your own weapons or do you do smith work for other folks?
