I have a mak 90, I took it out shooting and made sure to clear it when I put it back in the safe. Fast forward a couple months and the bolt is stuck forward. Almost seized. I have tried smacking the butt on the ground, tapping the charging handle with a rubber mallet and soaking the bolt in wd-40 over night and nothing has worked. Has anyone had a similar issue or have any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Thanks guys. 1) Put the butt on the ground standing straight up. 2) Put edge of foot (with shoe on) on charging handle 3) Give it a sharp downward push with the foot. Disassemble and see what the problem was. It's an AK, it can take it.

Just tried giving that a shot. Not budging. And I’m stomping the shit out of it.

With the dust cover off can you pinpoint what’s locked up? Is it that the bolt won’t rotate to unlock? Do you see corrosion in the carrier around the bolt?
I’m guessing here but maybe you shot some old surplus ammo that was corrosive and it’s rusted/corroded around the bolt? I’d soak it in break free a few nights in a row. Try tapping the bolt handle each night to see if it’s starting to loosen up. If it starts to budge give that charging handle a solid whack with the mallet.
Let us know what you figure out. I’ve never had an AK lock up on me. Curious what’s going on here.

Can’t specifically see what is locked up. The bolt wiggles a little so I don’t know if it’s the bolt but more so the carrier that is bound up somewhere. I was shooting norinco steel case that is supposedly corrosive free but I’m not sure how true that actually is. I’ll try your idea and update in a few days.

Take the dust cover off and recoil spring out. Im guessing is corroded from shooting corrosive primer ammo and not cleaning it?
All Chinese ammo should be treated as corrosive. Dont trust what is says on the box. End of the gas piston and gas block probably look like shit too.

We're gonna need pics when this thing comes apart. My money is also on corrosive ammo.

With the top cover and spring out can you wiggle the back of the firing pin? Its the round part sticking out under the carrier. If its free then the carrier or piston is stuck.

Yes I can wiggle it. I stuck a cleaning rod down the bore and was able to push the firing pin backwards.

I would guess its one of 3 things, bent piston rod, corroded piston tip in gas block or bent carrier rails.

BTDT with my first 5.45 AK74. Didn't realize the ammo was corrosive.
Put on a decent boot with a rigid sole, and kickstart the charging handle like your life depended on the rifle working.
Clean the rifle with boiling hot water next time. It evaporates almost immediately and doest cause rust.
