Take it . . . for what? To shoot it? Sell it? Repair it?

That's pretty damned cool!

It may be helpful to provide some close-up (macro) photos of any and all distinctive markings on the firearm. I'm not too well versed in these type of firearms, but with more information, I might be able to give you some sites to check.

shows a lot of similarity to a JJ Henry Trade Rifle

Image

Lots of similar rifles were made for the "Fur Trade". Trappers and Mountain Men would haul them into the frontier and trade with the Indians for fur. Since it uses a percussion cap it most likely dates to the mid 1800's rather than the early 1800's. If not a JJ Henry at least something similar.

Who knows how much of the "frilly dilly's" have been added over the last 150 years.

The thing is it has a set trigger but does appear to be a trade rifle, interesting part of history.

When you get it appraised, go to an antique dealer vs going to a gun shop. Antique dealers usually use a different pricing structure and can sometimes give a higher value, this may be a benefit depending on what you want to do with it.

Berks County, Pennsylvania, Jager Style Rifle. Made between 1835 and 1840...May be earlier, and converted from Flint...Not sure of the maker. Can you send pics of any writing on the barrel or on the lock plate? Suspect it may be a Jacob Goulcher....
