Hello all.
With the recent events of the china virus and now the riots, I am a brand new first time gun owner. I guess it's ridiculous I didn't prepare sooner. I've considered buying a shotgun or handgun for a while but never actually did anything until this week. As you already know, this is a terrible time to be purchasing firearms since stock is low, prices are high and everyone is busy as hell. Alas, I did find a Mossberg 590 and my hope is to be able to protect my family and property up near Lake Forest Park. I think the deranged mobs and takeover of Capitol Hill by the leftist goons will not end there and as city government support for SPD continues to decline (beyond shameful and horrible) I think other parts of the city will start to suffer a similar fate. With moron durkin and idiot inslee running things I have very little hope they will do what is required to restore genuine law and order. There is a F'n caliphate in Seattle now. It's a tragedy and I just about can't believe what's happening.
It's embarrassing to say this but I don't know a thing about guns and at this point I'm probably more of a liability to my family than helpful. I'm watching countless videos and reading as much as I can but the fact remains I have never fired a gun. I've been looking at various long gun and defensive shotgun classes but none of them take place in the near term and many of them have prerequisite requirements that I don't possess. I'll be continuing my search, but if any of you know any private instructors or if you're just real familiar with shotguns and would be interested in spending a few hours teaching someone like myself some of the basics, I'd like to hear from you. All time would be compensated, of course.
If I'm doing anything wrong with this post my apologies and please edit or ask me to edit and I will do so right away.
I'm very glad to have this forum available as a resource. Thank you.

Welcome to WaGuns and to gun ownership!
The Mossberg 590 is a nice shotgun. I think you made a good choice for a first gun.
Please feel free to ask any questions that you have, we are here to help. And we even have a new gun owner thread somewhere....

Welcome indeed! You chose well for a defensive Shotgun. Practice how to manipulate it and and understand how it works with it empty and pointed in a safe direction. Don't fear it, it's a Tool that you control. I would invite you to my Gun Club but it's Members only right now due to the Covid. Those video's on youtube are your friend right now, watch the basic ones on the Shotgun and manipulation and you will be fine until you can get to a range or the Woods. I don't know what shells you may have bought, but you really don't need Slugs or 00 Buck for Home defense. You need to understand situations where you don't want overpenetration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaR1EVybUgc

Greetings and Welcome to WaGuns. Congratulation on your decision to take action to protect you and yours. If I was closer to you, I would help you "Learn" some of the basics with your shotgun. Alas, I'm 100 miles South. Best of Luck, and I Pray you never have to use your shotgun in a "Serious Situation." cootduster

Welcome. I hope one of the folks here is near you and can take you to a range. My range is still closed. You mentioned shotgun, handgun. Never forget the ease of handling a carbine, pistol caliber.

Welcome to WaGuns. Welcome to Freedom and taking the first steps to defending yourself and your family.
Shotgun. Great first choice. Easier to use - most of the time and it’s the most flexible as to Ammo choices and lethality.
Next step for now is all about storage and ease of access for you and incases of little ones - the not so easy access for them. Every household is different and unique in regards to their setup. Just have to figure what is best for you and your specific situation.
Yes, do get with a few folks if you can... watch the videos and research all you can. Play the what if games and literally walk through your home with the shotgun to figure out what and where. Where the most defendable spots are and for maximum protection and weak points. That wall may be the best place but what lays past it?
Most scenarios I try to impart the importance of defending you and your loved ones. Bunker down and lock it up. If they break through - shoot. I try to avoid clearing a home by yourself. It’s an easy lesson. Just have someone hide and explore and see how many times they can get you before you even know what happened...
Please ask questions. You don’t know what you don’t know but if you have questions... ask away. There are a lot of folks here that love to type and give answers. Please take those answers with a grain of salt. Assess where and why they recommend this or that.
It’s like going to a surgeon... they are most likely going to recommend a surgical option (since that is their specialty).
Anyways, Welcome and do your research.

Welcome!
You've recognized that you need to learn and train. I think that's an incredibly important first step, too many buy a gun and never shoot it or shoot it once and keep it by the bed. Ask away, this is a very helpful place.
