Hello all. I moved to the Yakima area about 2012 but hadn’t come across this forum till more recently. Never really been much of a forum user and don’t utilize social media, so I’m kind of venturing out a bit and hoping to get to know some decent people.

Oh I’m not too picky. Just depends what I’m hungry for. Bad joke. Used to do a fair bit of cool guy shooting competitions and such, some 3 gun and IDPA. I just can’t move like I used to. Whole different story. I like to hunt and fish as much as I can, though about the only thing I hunt for in WA is duck. I’ve been itching to build me a “longer” range .300 WM for elk, mostly due to the recent hunting situation in my elk hunting area of Idaho and hunter conflicts. Don’t aspire to be shooting animals at 1k yards or anything.

Where do you hunt ducks? I mostly hunt around Moses lake and the two-cities area. Any duck hunting down Yakima way!

To both new guy Matt, & old guy Arisaka ( ), do you guys find duck tastes differently depending on where you get it?

Some say the diet of Western WA duck makes it less palatable, while Eastern WA duck has a different diet & tastes better...

Just wondered what y'all's experience was...

Much prefer eastside ducks. Westsiders can taste fishy.

I have a couple smaller holes along the Yakima river I get into when things freeze up the still water, but I spend a good bit of time hunting satus on the res. Sometimes Toppenish, but that place gets busy. I’ve been wanting to go out Moses lake way, but all my duck hunting buddies moved away last year and I kinda broke my truck...not racing it...and didn’t want to take the new truck into too many places.

I have to agree with this. Whatever fishy stuff they eat over there definitely effects the meat. Shot a couple ducks (I’ll have to re-id as I can’t remember) this year on the east side with a hooked bill and found them to not taste that great either. My German Shepard buddy didn’t seem to mind though. He has come out with me a couple times, but isn’t much help with retrieving.

I am just down the road from you a bit. As for wapiti I have a honey hole that is good for people that are old enough to get into that age special draw just like I do for the disabled. Ducks out on the Res I would go down closer to Toppenish out close to the refuge. There used to be some public fishing access off of Highway 12 too. i can not guarantee you a shot at a elk at 1000 yards but I do have a couple place out to 500. Having a quad is a big help if you qualify for the disabled category and the local forest service are used to having to deal with me and I do not take crap from them.
