Disclosing Location in Ads

Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:18 am

I was reading, on another forum (don't judge), a discussion about safes, storage, displaying guns etc. and one of the comments concerned "international exposure" of information on such forums (as if only national or state exposure, or even State exposure isn't bad enough.)

The concern is that by requiring disclosure of one's location, criminals would be one step closer to targeting a poster.

Here on WA-guns, it's already narrowed down pretty closely.

Any merit to dropping that requirement?

Not to me. That's just a little too paranoid.

But, it also doesn't matter to me to know where you live, unless you've got something up for sale.

Meh. Our requirement is that if you post a classified ad, that you give your city. That's pretty broad.

And hell, you don't even need to give the city that you live in -- just give a city that you're willing to meet in, or you can even say "I'll meet anywhere in King County" or whatever, if you're willing.

I don't feel like that's unreasonable. At some point, if you are going to meet up with someone, you are going to need to give SOME kind of location.

These are the same people that put a finger up in their craigslist/fb ads covering up their lic plate and then have backgrounds with street names/physical landmarks. Social engineering isn’t that hard, and the more you type/share, the easier it is.

Posting a basic location saves a lot of time if someone is on the other side of the state with a banging deal.

End of the day, if you don’t feel comfortable with it, then don’t participate.
