Not quite the plague of locusts that I would wish upon Cali, but close...

Days-long PG&E outages may be coming. Here's what to do if you lose power for days
https://www.sfgate.com/homeandgarden/article/prepare-pge-power-shutoff-backup-wildfire-season-13902288.php

Quote:
After days of warning, Pacific Gas & Electric confirmed Tuesday afternoon that 800,000 customers across 34 California counties would be left in the dark starting starting at midnight.

The utility planned the shut-off as a precaution due to high wildfire risk.

I've heard that this was coming. Chuckled to myself that they reap what they sow

Cause: Blame the power company for forest fires started by downed lines
Effect: They shut the power off during the next forecast windstorm

Now this little tid bit:

Morgan Hill to enforce a curfew Wednesday night
https://www.kron4.com/powershutoffs/authorities-enforce-curfew-in-morgan-hill-to-mitigate-potential-crimes/?fbclid=IwAR04SS6eL7mUjqi3jRrCLHwDkhwXiLPHUsXT3XcSDje1ILbiUJ84Be0yFXg

Quote:
MORGAN HILL (KRON) – Amid safety concerns during PG&E’s widespread power shutoffs across the Bay Area, some cities are cracking down on potential crimes that could be committed during this time in impacted areas.

The City of Morgan Hill will be enforcing a curfew starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday through 6:30 a.m. Thursday due to the power shutoff.

Officials said the curfew is intended to crack down on pedestrians loitering in areas that are impacted by the shutoff.

Better round up the guns just to be extra safe...

This might tie into that thread about the change to WA's constitution

This ties right into my thread about suing Fortnite.

You can't keep suing companies and not expect them to make adjustments- often undesirable ones. We all pay for these stupid lawsuits.

Someone smarter than me once told me a great way to solve the lawsuits is to cap the reward for wrongful death or whatever the issue is at the amount of life insurance the person owned. Maybe even make a minimum of $500k or 1 million + life insurance. If it wasn't worth it to pay for "X" amount when you were alive, why are you worth so much more dead? If not that, pick a multiple of income - basically the value you could have provided your family until retirement. Either way, cap it.

Anyway, it makes perfect sense to me to shut the grid down. Frankly, I don't understand people that whine so damn much when the power goes out. I don't mind it at all, and I can run the generator once in a while if I need to.

You have to remember that Commiefornia keeps telling people they, .gov, will take care of them. Cradle to grave.
Maybe some will wake up now and do some proper voting.

Absolutely

What do they expect to happen when nobody can do anything without the threat of a lawsuit...

Oh snap, only the government will be able to provide anything

Locally we are seeing this with the fight over natural gas. Seattle has banned natural gas in new construction

Never mind that natural gas is cheaper and overall more efficient. It's supplied by a private company, which is bad. The government should have the monopoly on power. In every sense of the word

True, but that's not strictly a Commiefornia issue. People here call 911 all the time because their power is out. You can't fix stupid, but we sure encourage them to breed.

I have been saying this for years.

The firewood wars. They have the "stove police" patrolling in the name of "clean air".

Its all BULLSHIT. Firewood is the only UNTAXED energy source that you can harvest yourself. They HATE that.

Eh, I'd have to dispute that one. Burning in wood stoves is extremely inefficient and does release a lot of smoke/pollutants. Could you imagine a city like Tacoma or Seattle heating primarily on wood? You wouldn't be able to breathe with all the smoke. In rural areas, sure, but big cities need something like natural gas and/or heat pumps.

I would agree with this if there were hundreds of millions of wood stoves out there, belching black smoke.

But there aren't. First of all, much smaller numbers.

Second of all, most wood stoves now are uber efficient. The only smoke you'll see out of those is when the fire is first lit and hasn't taken off yet.

Even as efficient as they probably are, coal fired electrical generation plants probably put out more pollution in a month than every wood stove in the US, in a year. In the end, those electric cars are probably polluting more than anyone's wood stove. (My opinion. I don't have links or numbers to back it up. But I think it is more probably true, than not.)

How can I help you, and/or make you smile, today?

The problem with being on social media, is that you know too many people that you don't know.

Joy is not a feeling. It is a strength. Some people are stupid, that's all there is to it. (And sometimes that stupid person is me/you.) Sometimes you just have to let stupid people be stupid. Don't let stupid steal your joy.

Holding onto unforgiveness and resentment is like drinking poison and expecting that other person to die. Anger will eat you up.

And they'll come crying to Trump to bail them out.

I’m all for hanging the bastard responsible for the death of someone rather than paying out a settlement. The whole wrongful death thing came about because we stopped settling our differences at high noon and throwing people who were grossly negligent in jail. If what you do out of sheer negligence and stupidity kills someone and you knew your actions would kill someone and just did not care you should pay for it. People would be a whole lot more responsible in their actions if they were actually responsible for them not just fiscally.

The reason there AREN'T that many wood stoves now is due to air quality regulations and primarily access to cheaper sources of fuel such as natural gas.

I love a wood fire and fireplaces but there is just no way to argue that it is more efficient or cleaner than a heat pump - even with power coming from a coal plant.

Numerous studies have shown that newer wood stoves almost never duplicate their efficiency in the real world. Wood that is too wet or dry will seriously reduce efficiency and increase pollution, and they lose efficiency over time. There are different types of pollution too - the worst with wood is particulate matter. Coal plants are generally required by the evil EPA to capture that particulate matter, so while not the cleanest fossil fuel (that would be natural gas), they're still cleaner than a household fireplace or woodstove. Coal also creates a far larger share of energy, so yes, if you just compare them straight across of course coal pollutes more than wood. BTU for BTU is what matters.

BTW, the leading source of electricity in the US is natural gas (35%), followed by coal (27%). In the PNW much more of that is hydroelectric/wind/solar so at least here, I would argue pretty confidently that heating with natural gas/heat pump is far cleaner than a fireplace.

Use your wood stove because they're awesome and there's nothing like a fire on a cold day - not because it's better for the environment.

We're off-topic now :bruce:

The backlash and hate I have seen on some game related forums is priceless. They are screaming how the power Co is slacking on maintenance which is causing them to do these blackouts, etc, etc. They should have upgraded and been prepared in the 12 months since the Camp Fire, (The most deadly US wildfire since 1918). I guess they think PG&E should have replaced the entire infrastructure in the last few months. sure, no problem, get right on that, here is your new power bill for 5x last months price.
