Its serves me NO purpose. Its not a powerful round for defense. So does that make it a good plinker?

A 357 rules over a 44 special in terms of stopping power and kill record. Is that 44special of your's going to be a good choice in bear country? Why not just get a 45LC if your looking for some cushy big bore cowboy loads? I can carry a 357 thats lighter, smaller, and has more power for defense.

If you want a plinker just shoot 38s or 22s?

Why a big bore, expensive to shoot target gun?

When I was looking for a 4" 44 mag to pack in the woods I found so many 4"44 specials for sale. I just don't understand where this guns fits in to any USEFUL gun selection.

How many 3" barreled target revolvers are you aware of?

It's not a cheapo Charter Arms Bulldog that can barely handle the old 246gr LRN at 700fps. That 624 will shoot 255gr gas checks at 950fps at standard pressure. Or 180gr JHPs at 1100fps. The latter is somewhere between a .40S&W and 10mm from a 5" auto. The .44 Special isn't "weak" but, out of deference to the crappy Charter Arms guns and older (but otherwise well-made) Colt SAAs and S&Ws, most manufacturers load super weak.

But I didn't buy that one because it's super useful. It's an uncommon Lew Horton distributor special from the mid '80s. The .44 Magnum version (629) is more or less the same except for a thicker barrel.

I know this is going to sound really weird to you, but it's OK to own a gun that's not in the latest, most powerful whizz-bang caliber. As an example, if you piled up all the bear, moose, and elk taken with .30-30s, .44-40s, and even .32-20s...well, you'd have a really enormous stinky pile of animals. They ded...and it didn't take a 3,000 ft-lb M.E. ultra-mag to get them there.

Some of 'em look like dudes.

Don't they realize it's sexist to have a photo of just the chicks, which if course excludes the dudes?
