Seems slow, expensive, low bandwidth limit, probably high latency.

Client is moving to Covington and say they can't get comcast, frontier, and any normal internet providers.

Other options?

T-mobile?

IIRC it's $200/mo doe 12 MB bandwidth, and 65 GB limit before throttle.
I get better on my cel phone.

Weird. I live on the edge of Covington and it's covered by the evil (over priced) Comcast.

That's what I was thinking.
Gotta be something else.

Satellite to me would be a last resort unless you were in the sandbox or on a ship.

I had customers down that way with DSL 20+ years ago.
Maybe they are way out in the sticks.

Comcast is evil and overpriced, but off the wire I'm getting true GB data speed.
Called them up and bitched when they raised my rates again 2 months ago, got them to knock off $50/mo plus a credit for the last overcharge (Those are hard to get).

Been playing that game with them for over 20 years.

Right now client has a huge property up north.
Have a huge RV garage, horse stables, horse riding pens.
Figure they would like something out of the way.
Like to buy it, but pretty sure I can't swing the $$. Plus too far out for my girl.
And I don't want to spend my days moving acres.

Satellite Internet is a connection of last resort, usually.

Your signal has to go 22,236 miles to space and then back to a ground station to then traverse terrestrial Internet infrastructure. High latency, limited bandwidth, rain interference, etc.

Terrestrial Fixed Wireless is usually your next step up, but there are Line of Sight and other issues.

What kind of LTE signal do they get?

She says it's kinda spotty.
I'm going to have them do some testing.
I agree.
Satellite would be my last choice.

I had to use hughsnet for a few years when I lived in the boonies. Never again. I'd rather stick my junk in a deep fryer then have to deal with them again.

150 bucks a month for a 50gb cap. Even though I was getting around 40mbps max download it only had a max of 2 upload and the latency was a killer. Even with a high download speed many apps just crash or stall due to the latency. It was usually around 1200ms. For comparison my low grade dsl is usually around 20ms.

Add this to frequent interruptions of service, sometimes for days, and the worst customer service I've ever dealt with.

Never again.

Go with mobile hotspot.

There are still ways to get completely unlimited.

Visible runs off VZW and has unlimited for $40/month.
Netbuddy runs off ATT and has unlimited for $65/month.

You take the sim card they send you, and put it in a 4G router, like this..

https://www.amazon.com/MOFI4500-4GXeLTE ... 0854C5P3B/

You can also get external antennas to get signal in virtually any situation. Even can go with a high gain antenna pointed directly at a tower if you need to, and get service from a tower 50 miles away (depending on terrain).

Even 'spotty' coverage is no issue with external antennas.

North of Shelton , viasat, hughesnet or centurylink. All have significant complaints. I switched my Verizon to comcast cell for about 1/2 price ( same towers). Real weak 4g signal so bought a Weboost amplifier. Actually works. Pretty slow download for internet, most youtube stuff works, havent tried movies. Browsing works fine. May become obsolete with 5g , I don't know.

I have high hopes for starlink. I really don’t want to experiment with Viasat because of the contract requirement and very negative reviews of it.

If they have cellular, then go with that.
Otherwise: No Internet < Satellite

Unless you have personally checked the site out you do not know what is really available. I installed a cell phone repeater Friday at the cabin and reception went from one bar 1x network to four and sometimes five. The only bad thing with the repeaters is the cable length and mine had one end of the cable fixed to each unit so I had to drill 7/8 inch holes to pass the coupling nut through.

I live in Covington and no problems with cable or internet. Cell phone can be bad with some carriers.

Boy, did I fuck up.
They are moving to Carnation.
Ugh.

Told her to send me the address and I'd see what was available.

Any carrier map is going to a rough guess, at best. They're theoretical, not actually measured.

Opensignal gives you real world results, but it relies on someone with an app having been there before, for it to give accurate results.
