Anyone have any experience hunting or trapping nutria/coypu in Washington that can talk about the licenses required and best permitted locations?

Its my understanding you dont need a license of any kind as they are an invasive species.

Does that mean any public land that isn’t explicitly marked “no hunting” is good to go?

Had a late night comedy show 'Insomniac' with Dave Atell where he would go out after midnight to see what people were doing. One episode he went out with Nawlins PD as they rode in the back of a small pickup, sitting in lawnchairs, jacklighting nutria and shooting them by the dozens with suppressed Ruger 10/22's. Now that would be a cool job.

Yup... and they are pretty much going unchecked. Quote: Nutria (Myocastor coypus, Fig. 1) are semi-aquatic rodents native to southern parts of South America. In the 1930s, they were sold throughout North America to fur farmers and as a means of controlling unwanted aquatic vegetation. Various associations, magazine and newspaper articles, and demonstrations at county fairs promoted the sale of nutria in Washington. More than 600 nutria farms existed in Oregon and Washington from the 1930s to the 1950s. Flooding and storms damaged holding structures, allowing nutria to escape. Farmers also released their stock when nutria farming became uneconomical. By the 1940s, nutria had been captured by trappers on both sides of the Cascade Mountains in Washington. Adult nutria average 24 inches long from the nose to the base of the tail. The tail itself is 12-16 inches long, round, and nearly hairless. Males are slightly larger than females; males weigh 12-20 pounds and females weigh 10-18 pounds. Depending on the nutria’s ancestry and current habitat, its fur will vary from light yellowish brown to dark reddish brown, and black. Their hind legs are much larger than the forelegs. When moving on land, a nutria may drag its chest and appear to hunch its back. Nutria are found in lakes, wetlands, sloughs, drainage ditches, and irrigation canals along the Columbia River and north to Skagit County. Cold temperatures seem to reduce the distribution of nutria, as they don’t live in areas where water surfaces freeze for long periods. https://wdfw.wa.gov/living/nutria.html

Growning up we just used a flash light and a shovel. The freeze in the light. Just walk up and wackem. Then the shovel serves double duty as a removal device, scoop and flip into the brush. Let nature take care if the rest.

Why can't they just call them what they are?
Giant rats!
A name like nutria makes it sound like a main course in some sort of weight watcher's diet.

Man, I always wished I could shoot the nutria down in Longview. My BIL used to live down there, and when we'd visit we'd see them all over the suburbs and in the park. He lived in the suburbs though, not in the countryside, so we weren't supposed to shoot them.

I have never ever seen one here.
Whatever it is that constantly eats dogs and cats, must keep the population from getting a foothold here.
