I agree it's bewildering they didn't have a retro fitted fire suppression system, halon, or whatever.
Okay, maybe there was some issues with a retro-fit. Maybe there was concern that water or chemicals would damage antiquities. Okay, fine.
Seems they would have a 24/7/365 team of fire brigade guys patrolling, every inch, day and night, with backpack tank fire extinguishers. And monitoring very carefully anyone using any power tools, fire, welders, grinders, etc.
The place was apparently a tinderbox of irreplaceable historically significant monuments worth untold billions of dollars, probably. WTF they didn't take more proactive fire suppression steps is absolutely mind boggling.

Whatever agency manages that church had been begging for money for renovations for years but they couldn't get enough support from either the government or the public to make the funds available. Every other iconic church in France is probably getting numbers together for renovation projects right now. We'll see if any of them get approval. Every other church, landmark, castle, ect throughout Europe is probably gathering numbers (or more pushing those numbers harder to "investors")
