After Notre Dame’s disastrous fire Monday, one big question was what sort of insurance policy could possibly be a backstop to help rebuild the 856-year-old world landmark filled with invaluable rarities?

The answer: None.

Some of those items are so old and rare that I'm sure they would be almost impossible to insure.

Lloyd's of London would be the only carrier I can think of....

So a Muslim museum 3 blocks away from the World Trade Center, 18 years later, makes you think a mosque will be built in place of the Notre Dam Cathedral by the end of the year?

The French law separating Church and State, passed on 9 December 1905, established State ownership of cathedrals.
So, it is self-insured, just like many things owned by the US government.

While my comment, saying about the same thing that Surevaliance said, was made tongue-in-cheek I woudn't have been surprised if it had occurred.

Macron has since come forward and vowed to rebuild. Now I'll make another outrageous prognostication: the new cathedral will be replete with multi-cultural facilities and Islamic prayer room - you know - for diversity.

So far two really rich Frenchmen are donating 300 million euro to help rebuild. :thumbsup2:

Which is awesome they have offered $$$ to do so. I think they have said theres been ~$950 million USD pledged/donated to rebuilding.

But at the same time where were all these people the last 10+ years the church was pleading for money to bring everything up to standards? Or any of the historical buildings which most are in need of work.

Guess its just me, but its always irked me that it takes something getting destroyed for people to offer help

When people can actually see where the money is going, they tend to donate more.

I heard this morning that over $1B has been raised to fix/replace it. Then a christian called into the John Carlson show and said "We can raise $1B to replace a 800+ year old building but we can't get the church to to accept they have pedophiles in their ranks. Nor provide reparations to those who have been hurt by their pedophilia."

I saw a episode of This Old House, were they added a sprinkler system in a 100+ year old home because insurance required it based on the value the home owner was putting on it. I'm not making fun of the fact that a 800+ year old structure was destroyed, but if it was so important, why didn't they protect it?

Which I fully agree is why it takes events for people to do anything.....but it is still a BS excuse. What once was going to cost ~$170 million USD is now going to be substainally more than that. last estimate i saw was over $8 billion now.

Complacency is a big influencer. Hey, if it's been fine for 850+ years then it will probably be fine tomorrow. Except tomorrow came and there was a fire and now it's not fine anymore.

Whatever agency manages that church had been begging for money for renovations for years but they couldn't get enough support from either the government or the public to make the funds available. Every other iconic church in France is probably getting numbers together for renovation projects right now. We'll see if any of them get approval.

This reminds me of a road through Seattle. Can't think of the of it right now... via, via duck, viaduct? Something like that.
Only thing was, instead of repairing it, the slave owners said, "No, we need something better." (translation= we need to fleece the sheep. Knock it down to four lanes from six, put it underground in quicksand, in an active earthquake zone and then charge a toll. What could go wrong?)

I haven't even been able to read the news...just WhatsApp messages from friends in surrounding arondissements. I can't look at the news pictures. It's heartbreaking.

The first time I visit Notre Dame, I was with my brother and our French governess, I was probably eight, and of all the things I remember, it's the floor. Genuflecting and kneeling during prayer, looking at the floor, thinking that the men who laid that stone did so knowing they would never see the completed construction. Even then I understood the significance of Notre Dame.

Ive read articals recently that talk about how bad the condition if it was. It's disgusting how it was allowed to decay when it is such an iconic thing. Nobody cared until something happened

They could have done it the American way, just sold the name to a corporation for some loot to fix it up.

Just hang something on it like "Verizon Cathedral" or "Progressive Parish" or "Amazon Chapel" or maybe "State Farm Temple" and cash in some dough.
