California city will remove gender terms, including ‘manhole’ and ‘manmade,’ from municipal code

Gender-inclusive restrooms and have become more and more common across the country.

Now, the city of Berkeley is taking it a step further.


The city is removing gender-specific words in its municipal code. It will cost the city about $600 to make the changes. The Berkeley City Council unanimously passed the measure to replace more than two dozen commonly used terms on Tuesday.

It will switch words like “he” and “she” to “they” and “them” in the city code. “Manholes” will be changed to “maintenance holes” and references to manmade will be changed to “artificial.”

Councilman Rigel Robinson, a 23-year-old recent graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, sponsored the ordinance. He tweeted, in part: “There is power in language. It’s a small move, but it matters.”

Also on Tuesday, Berkeley city council voted in favor of becoming the first city in California to ban natural gas in new building construction. The measure will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

Finally some action from government that will feed the poor, house the homeless, eradicate corruption in business and politics, eliminate addiction, and conquer gang violence. We all sleep better tonight knowing our politicians are fighting the good fight.

Things have been spiraling downwards in this country for a while, but to me it just seems like somebody opened the flood gates in the last few years. All great civilizations have fallen at some point in history. Looks like it might be our turn.

Maybe the rapture is near.

"Republicans are racist bigots" (but our soft bigotry of low expectations for minorities isn't racist)
