I’ve got an original 1917 Navy recruiting poster, was given to me by the gal (Bernice Tongate) that posed for it in 1917. She has actually signed it on the back.

I’m wanting to get a good appraisal done, but not sure where to take it.

Input appreciated.

ETA...The pic shown is not the actual poster, just a pic off the net for reference.

Not to take away from how cool the poster is but that is funny.

Bernice had a summer house at Lake Cushman, I helped her do some repairs on it in the 80's.

She told me that later on in life she regretted posing for the poster...she always wondered how many boys enlisted because of her masculinity challenge, and later never came home from the war.

She was an interesting old gal to say the least.

A quick ebay search shows original posters asking 200-650, with most around the 250-400 range. I guess it's really worth what someone is willing to pay. That's a great piece of history right there!

Where are you finding those?

The only 1 I can find is $2,999.00 and it’s a later version with Naval Reserve and Coast Guard on it.

Well, good point. I wasn't looking for that exact one, just original recruiting posters from the era. That one is iconic, so probably more. I'm assuming somewhere out there is a network of people who collect this stuff and you need to find access to it. Maybe a WaGuns-type forum for WWI/WWII stuff?? I don't know.

I did find another later one for $550...but he cannot verify it's original.

Yeah I'm hoping someone here has connection to a collector or reputable appraiser.

Contact a few antique places, such as Pacific Galleries in Seattle. They might be able to help you with a value and a buyer.

I can't help answer the question . . . but having one that was signed by her and given by her is FREAKING COOL!!!

Signature in back?
Throw it up on Ebay for 5 grand, photos of your poster both sides with "the story ".
Drop it in price every 30 days until it sells.

Cool piece!

So, this guy might have some insight...he seems more of a seller, but might could guide you to figuring out what it's value is.

There's an 'about me' section, and a contact me...

https://www.rare-posters.com/ww1bond.html

Also, the PBS show uses this guy, Ncholas Lowry, to appraise Prints & Posters on Antiques Roadshow. He's with Swann Auction Galleries in New York, but flies all over to do the shows...

Even if he didn't respond to an inquiry, maybe they have catalogs of previous auctions online that might net you some info.

Also, some of his appraisals for PBS are on PBS' website, as well as YouTube.

Good Luck! It will be interesting to hear what you find out.
