A Snohomish County, Washington State resident who was returning from China was diagnosed with the Wuhan coronavirus, according to the CDC."

Since this virus has already demonstrated the ability to jump from human to human, and Chinese New Year starts in a few days, it's unlikely that China will be able to mount an effective defense as millions of Chinese folks go home over the holiday. It appears they're doing a better job than they did with SARS which they tried to hide though, so that's something. It's already uncomfortably close to my wife's family in Singapore, but at least there have been no reports of it in Malaysia (yet). However, the Malaysian family is headed to Singapore for CNY. We've asked them to at least stock up on masks. The biggest potential problem is a "super spreader", someone who travels to a large city when they're shedding virus and don't know it. The potential for infecting thousands of people is great.

17 dead in Wuhan now and the city of 11 million is now under quarantine. (I don't know how extensive a quarantine could be in a city that big?) Public transport out of the city is temporarily shut down.
