Most carmakers had production problems caused by supply issues and component shortages, and Ford is no exception. For months, the Blue Oval has struggled to meet the demand for its hottest models. To keep the production lines going, Ford has made the painful decision to produce cars without critical components. Some 40,000 vehicles are awaiting various parts before they can be delivered to dealers, and Ford promised they would be ready to ship by the end of the year.

This is the issue with "Lean" or "Just in time" manufacturing, it gets wrecked with any hiccup. Toyota learned this in the earthquake a few years back(even tho another name for this principal is the "toyota way"). So what did they do? They pinpointed critical parts they cant get anywhere else, microchips were high on the list, and they added a huge safety stock incase something happened. They came out pretty good atleast on the initial crash. Meanwhile the big three only employ people who can expedite parts world wide... So lets say a Philippine tanker ship sinks and ford looses all of their next batch of headlight switches, the factory produces more but they will be a day late and halt the line.... Ford then calls in a guy who has contacts all across the world. He calls up a connection in the Philippines, says "go to this address, pick a box of switches, an airline ticket is waiting at the airport". This kinda works when things are regular but melts when things go a little off. If a production line stops you are talking $10's if not $100's of thousands of dollars lost ever MINUTE.

An increase in blanked, or canceled sailings, from Asia bound for the U.S. is hitting some of the biggest domestic ports hard, including the Port of Long Beach and Port of Savannah, reducing their ability to ship exports. The decline in vessels coming from Asia on the Transpacific route is creating an increase in the wait time, or dwell time, of export containers at the Port of Long Beach.
Supply chain research firm Project44 tracks exports from “gate-in to loaded on a ship,” said Joshua Brazil, Project44 vice president of supply chain insights, and that metric hit 18.33 days at the Port of Long Beach, as of November 10.

Organized Retail Crime is now measured in BILLIONS of dollars.
How much of the "shortages" and "outages" seen at the retail levels is "supply chain" and how much is outright theft?
Merchandise will be locked up in many stores now.
I have this vision of the future where shelves will contain only a single display item -behind glass - of which you then select a quantity (on your phone?) and your order will be compiled by warehouse workers (robots?) and delivered to you curbside after payment, either with CBDC or to a cashier shielded by ballistic glass.

The sales employees were approved to tell customers of the bankruptcy plans and to take paid time off for the rest of the week.
In a meeting later Wednesday, according to a video of the meeting viewed by FreightWaves and two employees present, the senior vice president told employees to backtrack on the bankruptcy statement. She said to “correct” any customers that were previously told there would be a bankruptcy and to share the following statement:
“Yellow’s talks with the IBT are ongoing. As previously stated, and in keeping with fiduciary responsibility of the company’s executives, the company continues to prepare for a range of contingencies.”
As of late March, Yellow had an outstanding debt of about $1.5 billion. Of that, $729.2 million was owed to the federal government.
In 2020, under the Trump administration, the Treasury Department granted the company a $700 million pandemic-era loan on national security grounds. Last month, a congressional probe concluded that the Treasury and Defense Departments “made missteps” in this decision — and noted that Yellow’s “precarious financial position at the time of the loan, and continued struggles, expose taxpayers to a significant risk of loss.”

Yellow did what CF did. Bought up a huge amount of other carriers, some larger than themselves, ran them all as subsidiaries, had a hard time logistically tying them all together, some union, some not union, management chasing volume and revenue numbers over actual net profitability, changing the official name all the time (taxes?) and in general, being foolish with the actual company day to day operations in favor of a brand and a ticker symbol.
Saia and Old Dominion are just lovin' it.

Drought in central America is problematic for the Panama Canal.

Well according to a paper done by 1st LT (of the Turkish DotMil no less!) “Optimizing the Capacity and Operation of US Army Ammunition Production Facilities” written back in 2002, (link HERE) there are currently 16 Arsenals in the US that provide ALL of the primary manufacturing https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... Facilities (this will download, just wait)
From what I remember, we did outsource some ammo production to Israel and Wolf during the GWOT. And after the Sandy Hook scare, foreign production was able to make up for much of the shortfall in domestic production.
